Don't risk it. Drink growlers at your first opportunity

Agreed but sometimes that's not a choice. Sometime is purchase when available vs freshness

Rarely. Prefilled growlers are not a normal thing.

But yeah, I get what you're saying. Personally I'm not buying one of these growlers unless it's immediate.

I post about drinking growlers ASAP often. To me, there is a lot of room for error. I'd guess Sean is somewhat handcuffed here and making the best of it.

The beer I've had from his has been really nice so I will always encourage folks to drink it fresh because that's what I've done

The fervor shows that beer nerds will do almost anything to get their hands on what they think is the next big thing, or to avoid being that sad loser who missed out.

    I quit.

EDIT: Holy fuck this whole article makes me want to kill myself. This whole thing is like a high school bully picking on the nerds.

I understand what this author is getting at but why use an example, Chaos Day, where you have to stretch the truth and undersell the credibility that Shaun has built. I'm pretty sure RAM Schaumburg is a little different then your average chain restaurant making beer. "Two small pours and buffet bar food"? I got 2 full pours and that food was really good.

I got into a little tiff with this guy on Twitter right now. He said that he's a fellow beer nerd who also couldn't get tickets to Chaos Day. So his response was to write a cliche ridden article about how breweries don't make enough beer on purpose to create hype. Wow, I thought you guys were bad BeerAdvocates.

I actually enjoyed the article for just finding out more about RAM. I didn't know Shaun worked there since he was 17...

^This. $75 for 2 BA bottles, 2 big ass pours, and a crap-ton of good (albeit standard bar-style) food isn't all that crazy. If you went to a bar in the city and had a buffet of decent food, plus 64 oz of imperial or BA stouts - I'd imagine you'd pay more than 75 bucks.

I didn't think that aritcle was that disparaging really, but everyone interprets things differently. I also think it's a stretch to say Chaos Day had really good food - I'm not knocking the food, but more along the lines of thinking it was standard bar-style food that @Chuckdiesel24 mentioned. I definitely have no qualms with the value for Chaos Day at all between the pours of the beers (which I was impressed with...I don't know that I'd say it was big ass or boss , but I did comment on it being bigger than expected when I got my pour), bottles and food. I'd do it again in a heartbeat...but maybe that's what the article is getting at - we're just so freaking crazy as craft beer nerds.

If you're going to feature Chaos Day in a shame piece it should only be for silly beer release names. I realize the event is named after the actual beer, but Chaos Day sounds like a Godsmack headlined butt rock festival in southern Illinois. That's my only complaint though.

You also get the glass. Not that I need it - I assume most people on here are like me and have way too much beer glassware. However, there's a cost to that too and I actually like and use the one we got

It's all relative. I would would rather drop $75 on an event like Chaos Day where I get to sample stuff, have a nice experience, talk beer, and come away with some bottles vs. blow similar or more on a sports event or concert that I'm going to have to drop a further $50 for inferior food and beer and leave with nothing.

Yo, are you dudes for real? You guys read this article and your big takeaway was "wow, Shaun's worked there since he was 17"? Dog, this dude wrote a Crain's Chicago Business article that starts "Craft beer nerds who don't get their num nums are sad losers". And then he's like brewers no one cares about make people care about them by making sure these losers can't all get their happy juice.

OH MAN! Is that why he doesn't make enough beer for everyone because he doesn't know how?!?!

I kinda took it as bashing RAM and Berns in a way the first time I read it. I read it again and I still kinda feel that way.

Let me pull some choice quotes for you
" But creating scarcity is proving to be a low-risk way to stand out amid an ever-crowded field of competitors."

"For the beer chaser, the whales of old like Goose Island's Bourbon County Brand Stout or 3 Floyds' Dark Lord are almost passe."

I mean, it's not wrong. I entirely agree with you that reading the article made me hate the current craft beer scene a little, but scarcity marketing is working really well around here.

Also, if BCS and DL are passe, people need to get the fuck out of the way and let me have them all. I'll drink passe beer all day while everyone else drowns in sweet FOMO brews.
