The recent trend near me with two, new, very local breweries is that a draft at the brewery is the same price as in a bar, $8, $9.... (near NYC).

Most breweries price their draft and package at the same (or more) than local bars and retailers. The last thing they want to do is undercut their biggest customers.

I like the smell of an operating brewery. Hell, just being there puts me in a good mood.

That is very sensible, and my recollections may amiss, but the more renown and distributed brewers near to here and those in Astoria, Portland, Seattle (where I spend a month each summer) seem to give at least a $1 or $2 break for house brews at the brewery compared to local retail prices.

Ive seen a lot of responses about not having food. It is illegal in some states, New Jersey, to serve food. The bar and restaurant "lobby" in NJ is strong and it cost a lot of money to have a liquor license which breweries do not need to have. So there are some strict laws in place to protect the bar and restaurants, one being no food at the brewery.

No kidding. Just walking around the old area near the Heineken Brewery in Amsterdam is like walking in the industrial 'smog" of a massive bakery. Being inside the brewery is even better. I can smell it now!
