I can't believe it took this long for that question to come up.

as errantnight stated, there are a bunch of non-magnetic SS. I am sure the people designing your device chose very carefully to not have a SS with magnetic properties. Magnetic permeability is more of a sliding scale rather than simply black and white.

very true on the nickel. I was just trying to keep it simple. I am a mechanical engineer with a materials science and physics degree and am fully aware about the details of magnetism, especially since my job is very integrated in the technology (I design and build electromagnetic energy harvesters).

because of the side that I approach things, I view most SS as magnetic. We use very strong magnets, and even SS with low magnetic permeability can be a problem with us. Because different grades of SS can be magnetic due to how they are worked, and not all vendors know the material properties of their parts we have had numerous occasions of people telling us a SS part is non-magnetic, when in fact it is.

anyways, this has gotten really off topic. The SS growlers are awesome. I plan on getting one, to use as a giant water bottle if for no other reason. And of course when i get it, I will try to stick a magnet to it

I have yet to hear or read about anyone getting in trouble due to the "gray zone" of the growler law. The fear-mongering you read about on this site is created by 1. ignorant people who aren't lawyers nor do they work at breweries and 2. breweries who want to sell growlers and make some profit.

According to the law how it is currently written, there is nothing wrong with attaching a paper tag to a blank growler, so long as the tag hits all the checkboxes as defined by the law. But that wouldn't be very profitable to the breweries, now would it?

That's what any growler is if you drink its entire contents in one sitting.

don't forget 3. Many of the start-up SoCal breweries who had to deal with specific demands of the labels and the growler-closures by local PDs. Who is more likely to be right, a business owner that doesn't want to get shut down for getting their license revoked or a bunch of geniuses on BA? Snark aside, people forget that local PDs have an enormous say in the growlers (at least in San Diego) and the State law isn't the last word legally.

For example, a few years ago the Ballast Point facility shared with HomeBrewMart had an inspection and had to modify incoming growlers (by affixing labels that fit the guidelines of the law). Pizza Port also made a change to the glass a couple of years ago, not sure if this is due to enforcement action or if they were trying to avoid any problems.

I for one really enjoy Societe's beers and think they are headed in a great direction.

However, I have the SS growler, I've only used it maybe 3 times and it is starting to rust in a couple of places on the inside-bottom towards the edges. Anyone else experiencing this?

Disclaimer: I know it isn't Societe's fault and haven't notified them either as the very small amount isn't a big deal to me. However, if it continues, they should probably be notified...

That's weird. If I'm not mistaken, the main advantage of stainless steel is that it DOESN'T rust.
[I just checked my Societe SS growler and, so far, no signs of rust.]

I have rust spots on the outside of mine. It looks like the inside has a coating that should prevent rust. Maybe your coating is/was defective. I'd bring it in and show them. If it is defective they should be able to exchange it through the manufacturer.
