Yes, the Inn at Cape Kiwanda is definitely spendy. I've never stayed there. But I've found many reasonably priced Airbnb houses in Pacific City in the $100-150/night range. There's also the Cape Kiwanda RV park, which has cabins that can be rented for $50-150/night. Those prices probably depend on amenities and season.

I stayed at one of those sketchy looking motels along the main drag as you come into Pacific City a couple years back for a night. The room was clean, it served it's purpose.

The wife and I stayed there a few years ago. We usually look for more modest lodging, but it was definitely worth it for a special occasion.

Beer edit for beer: We stopped at Pelican and bought a bottle of Bridal Ale the year we started dating. We enjoyed that bottle a couple years later, after we were married. Seemed appropriate.

My buddy just bought a house in South Beach/Newport and I'm flying there in a week to visit him. Gonna detour and hit deGarde on the way from PDX. Is there anywhere else I should be sure to stop at on the drive down from Tillamook?

Go over to Astoria first. Fort George for sure and you could also hit Buoy and Reach Break on your way down the coast.

I agree with this post, and want to also throw a mention to Astoria Brewing. I liked their beers a fair bit when I was there.

The locations in Astoria are great and worth going to. However, the added driving alone will add a couple hours onto your trip (as opposed to driving straight to de Garde), and then of course there's whatever added time you end up spending in Astoria. Not saying you shouldn't spend the extra time to head up that way, but the added time it will take is something to consider.

Between Tillamook and South Beach there's not a whole lot, but there is the Pelican pub in Pacific City (decent beer and great views), Twist (if you need a RR fix; also in Pacific City), Lighthouse Brewhouse in Lincoln City (if you've never been to a McMeniman's outpost, this might be worth a stop for you), and of course Rogue down in Newport (which I personally think is worth visiting if you're going to be in the area anyway). I'm not sure any of these places qualify as "must stops" on the way to your buddy's place in South Beach, but if you need something to break up the drive down, you might consider them.

I like Bier one, and was tempted to suggest it, but I just didn't feel like the taplist was sufficiently diverse and interesting to recommend it. It's one of those places where I always come away thinking "this place is great for the coast, and what a welcome alternative to the selection over at Rogue." Definitely a cool spot though, and if the OP happens to be staying in South Beach for any length of time, I would certainly recommend it as well.

So if you have time (and beer drinking capacity) for only one spot in Astoria, which would it be? Fort George?

Fort George would be my choice. And then you can go next door to the Blue Scorcher Bakery for a chocolate ginger cookie which is almost worth a trip to Astoria all by itself.

Note: I have yet to visit Reach Break, a brewery which specializes in wild ales. However, it would have to be implausibly good to make me choose it over the quality and variety at Fort George. Your mileage, as always, may vary.

+1 more for Fort George. Buoy has a great space, food and beer but Fort George is still superior beer wise.

Yeah, I gotta go with Fort George. Make sure you visit the Lowell Street Taproom, that has the largest number of beers available.

Should probably explain. Fort George has a whole block compound set up. The main restaurant has one taplist, the upstairs pizza place has another taplist and the LST is basically in the brewery and has the largest taplist avaialble.

I'll be in South Beach 5-6 days so I'll hit up Rogue and Bier One. Anyone nearby wanna open some good Midwest bottles while I'm there?

Hardly made of money, but this will be a special trip with the wife. So don't mind a splurge for the right place (which for me means up to the $200/night range; higher than and you've lost me).

Hey, thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Had a great four days on the coast. Able to visit Buoy, Fort George, de Garde, Pelican, and Twist Wine.

The weather could've been better, but also could've been worse. Actually, probably the best day was when a big storm came through, and we could just sit inside the Pelican watching it blow!

Hope to make it back someday.
