Well done - some people like different things, right? I have no issues with people liking other beers more than something I like. You might be surprised at how many people don't share your sentiment for beers such as TH.

Sorry for the out of time response, but I just wanted to say that I had this recently in NYC at Valhalla and was pretty blown away. After they tasted mine, 4 of my 5 co-workers ordered it for their next beer. Truly a phenomenal beer.

I would love to see the lineup and the final ratings.

My list of favorite mexican stouts begins and ends with whichever ones are least spicy. "Abraxas? Very tasty. Would be even better with less spice! Xocoveza? Love it! Can someone cut the spice?" That's why I love the barrel-aged ones, because typically at least SOME of the heat falls off. Love BA Xocoveza (I'm in a minority there, I think), love BA Chocolate Caliente, etc. I've got a bottle of PW's BA End of Days that I'm sitting on, waiting for that damned heat to go away.

I've had neither Local Hero, nor any Tree House beer, and I don't particularly love Rev's Hero series (loved the first batch of Unsessionable though, so it's not Rev hatred). With that being said, the NE style is pretty distinct, so I don't find it at all hard to believe that it's not for everyone. I love all styles of IPA equally (as long as they're good), but clearly a lot of people fall into one camp or the other (this battle rages pretty hard over in the Beer Talk forum).

On the other hand, given the thread we're in, it's not hard to guess what camp most people here fall into.

Exactly my thoughts on this thread, it is for NE IPAs so I would bet 99% of people in this thread don't prefer Local Hero to TH...

I like Rev Hoppy stuff but it doesn't come close to Tree House...

BA End of Days was the single spiciest stout I've ever had. I had it at Emporium over the summer and holy shit... I couldn't even finish it. And I like spicy stouts.

Abraxas, Xocoveza Charred (last year), and Chocolate Caliente (we have BA too, but not sure if we'll include it) will definitely be part of the share.

This year's BA Chocolate Caliente isn't as good as last year's, in my opinion. Doesn't have the sweetness that I liked so much about the original.

I assume BA EoD won't reach Stone Crime levels of heat, but I'm definitely going to keep sitting on the damn thing for a while. I only got the damn thing because it was PW's answer to the Mexican stout, but now I'm regretting it a little.

It was just an example I came up with. There wasn't a need to be a jerk about it with your earlier response - everyone has opinions about beers, and none are better or more "right" than others. I get that we're in a Chicagoland NE IPA thread so I'll say I liked Galaxy Bowl and Juicy better than TH. Is that OK?

NO, FUCK YOU AND YOUR OPINIONS!

In all seriousness, let's all just be happy about whatever beer we've got access to. Depending on what's around tomorrow, I'm gonna pick up a sixer of Ironica, a bottle of Hubbard's Fresh One Hop, or just wait to pick up a bomber of Snoochie on Saturday (probably the least likely option). Either way, they'll be tasty, and more importantly, LAZY options. :grinning:

Not feeling the bitterness in this one. Way better than Cirrus though. Can't seem to stomach a can of that stuff.

Well, I mean Julius and Green have over 200,000 combined check-ins on untappd and their ratings are over 4.5. Galaxy Bowl has 2,500 check-ins and a 4.28 rating. So while you're right that everyone does have an opinion, the overwhelming general consensus is that Tree House is better than Galaxy Bowl.

Someone can say that McDonald's makes a better burger than Au Cheval too.

I'm just amazed how well TH and Trillium cans hold up in terms of taste after many weeks. That's something Chicago breweries can't replicate in terms of NE style IPA's.

Liking something is an opinion. Just because one thing has 200,000 ratings at a 4.5 doesn't mean someone can't like the 4.2 2,000 checkin better. It's subjective.

But Seriously guys can we talk about chile stouts more in this thread?

I think it's similar to how Budweiser is so consistent every batch. Hell, I just read in another thread that GI mixes batches of BCS between 8-12 months generally, to get that consistent BCS taste.

TH, TR, the Alchemist, TG, etc., all these guys have been doing hazy beers because they decided that was their thing, and they've got their techniques down. The Chicago guys that are giving this stuff a try are doing it because they want to give the style a shot; it's like the difference between doing a karaoke version of a famous song, and recording a version of that song in your own style.

Tl;dr - I think the local guys who actually want to perfect the style will do so without too much problem. Until then we'll be seeing these inconsistencies.

When I picked up a crowler earlier this week, the head brewer walked over and mentioned they were brewing up an IPA that day. I asked: "Another NE style?" And he said: "Not this one but we'll do another soon".

I'm just waiting for the Big Boys to try their hand at a NE IPA.

You just know this is the year Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas, Deschutes, etc put out some form of a NE IPA, they have some of the most talented brewers in the world AND they'll put out a consistent product every time.
