Honestly, I try Notorious once every six months or so, waiting to be as impressed as everyone else seems to be. I love Boneyard and I love triple ipa's but it just doesn't do it for me.

Yeah, that was pretty great but radically different from any of the others. I'd bathe in it.

Upper Lip's blind triple IPA taste test last year was pretty awesome. Nobody knew what six beers they were drinking, or if The Younger was even one of them. I'm pretty sure I ranked Younger 5th.

    The Winners:
    1st: Boneyard Notorious
    2nd: pFriem Triple IPA
    3rd: Breakside Safe Word
4th: Russian River Pliny The Younger
    5th: Culmination Ferret The Younger
    6th: Ecliptic Hypernova

This will be the first time I've been anywhere near a PtY release. Was thinking APEX, what's so bad about it?

Nothing really, but if posts from last year are to be believed, Apex would take the keg off and put it back on at random intervals just to fuck with people.

I like Apex, lots of others don't. It's a never ending debate here in the NW forum.

Oh boy... rather than responding, I would simply ask that you read my BA review (there are pros and cons to the Apex, but the review will give you a pretty good impression of what to expect... and why some folks are put off by the place.).

Rather than going to Apex, it would be my recommendation that you consider going to some place like Belmont Station, Beermongers, Bailey's or the Horse Brass. There will almost certainly be a much smaller crowd, you'll likely be treated better, the event will be better organized and for certain you won't pay as much.

Yeah I read that, seemed like a weird thing, never thought about pulling it randomly.

@John_M I've been a few times, no complains yet, but I can see the points you brought up in your review. Cash is annoying, but now I come prepared.

Either way, looking forward to enjoying my first PtY somewhere in town and maybe meeting some BA's along the way!

Definitely happened. Prior to last year APEX would announce ahead of time and just tap at opening. Usually a line but never trouble getting any.

Belmont Station last year did one unannounced. I think Baileys Upper Lip did as is well, or maybe that was the year before. And always Beermongers. Last year was especially close to the RR release and tasted as good and fresh as ever, compared to some other years where it is a month behind.

One of the main reasons I've never been. Add to that pricing and staff reviews and I'll just pass. It isn't as though I can't get good beer elsewhere.

Beermongers does dumb shit too. Roscoes does it right. They announce when and what time then sell tokens. Usually like "tapping Monday at 4:00 tokens go on sale at 3:30" then you can stay & wait or comeback whenever. You get a 10oz pour without the added "rare" charge that a lot of places do.

:-) You're preaching to the choir. If they get a keg this year, and if they announce the tapping time on their website, that's where I'll be going.

From where I live now, it's really not very convenient for me to drive over there. I still do anyway on occasion, as the vibe, tap list, and low key atmosphere, are hard to beat.

Because Apex plays games, and Beermongers would never play a game like putting Younger on, but listing it as Miller High Life or something?

For what it's worth, I thought that was hilarious.

    Me too.

Maybe it's just my perception of Apex based on some of the previous things they've done in the past, but I found the two incidents pretty distinguishable. The Beermongers event struck me as pretty much just harmless hijinks. Anyone who had any familiarity with the normal BM tap list would realize that this had to be some sort of joke. And it's not like the bartender (or one of the other patrons there) wouldn't tell you the truth if you asked them about the Miller tap handle.

Taking the keg off and on again just to fuck with people... that strikes me like an asshole move, and unfortunately, is completely in keeping with some of the crap I've seen (and/or heard) Apex pull in the past. It doesn't help that Apex will likely charge the highest price in town for younger as well (assuming they get a keg).

Shrug. But honkduh is certainly right... BM does some dumb shit as well from time to time. However, IMHO, the stuff that Apex likes to pull seems to go a bit beyond just dumb at times.

Given any sort of choice, I'd just as soon not go to either BM or Apex for a younger event. I have to confess having the owner at BM lie to me about having C&C Bbomb during a Fremont event a couple months ago has soured me on them a bit. I've haven't gone back there since that incident.

I've had Younger at Belmont, Horse Brass and Saraveza over the years, but Roscoe's has been my go to for the last few. It can get crazy, but they seem to have it dialed in for the most part. Last year they had several triples on tap including Notorious, Safe Word and Melvin Shaolin. Was nice to try them side by side. Would never dis Younger, but no need to break your back trying to get some. It's a great beer and def worth trying at least once though.

I thought the Beermongers tactic was funny and not at all like apex, who also felt the need to tweet some jerko-sarcastic comment about anyone even interested in younger (on top of the tapping hijinks). Sure, they weren't transparent, but they weren't mean either.

Agreed, Roscoes is practically the only way to walk in to a bar like a civilized person and buy a glass, since Belmont turned it into an event.

    Think John's will have it?

Now that's a good question. I'm still holding out hope that they'll get some special/weird kegs like they do bottles but so far it's been pretty normal stuff going on tap.

Speaking of low key spots. Moon and Sixpence has Safe Word on now. They also got a keg of BA salted Carmel stout. Their list can get stagnant, but every now and then they get something really cool

It would make sense that they would get a keg, seeing as how they buy so much product from the distributor. On the other hand, I get the impression they're still feeling their way with the draft line, so who knows. They might not even think to ask about it.

Kind of puzzled that there doesn't seem to be any online information about younger tappings in PDX. Beer bars in Denver and Philly have already scheduled and held younger events over the past week, yet there's nothing about any tappings in PDX in the HOPWATCH. I checked the websites for most of the "usual suspects," but so far have seen nothing.

I'll be there (Oregon anywhere PtY is) first weekend in March. Hope it's around then.
