So I've done a lot of looking around to look at threads of people building fermentation chambers and haven't seen what I thought might work. I'm planning to get an upright freezer, separate it into a top and bottom half using insulation foam board, and have the bottom half for holding kegs. The top half I'm planning on having the light bulb in a can trick as a heat source for warmer ale fermenting temps. I'm very limited on space so I can only have one piece of equipment. Does anyone have this kind of setup, or know of something similar that works? Preferably I'd like to be able to have legs going while fermentation is happening.

    Hey,

    Welcome to BA.

From the stuff I've read on here, side-by-side fridges aren't that reliable and are more complicated than running a warmer side and a cooler side. I'd think you'll run into the same problem when you try to partition your standing freezer. Your thermostat(s) and your compressor won't want to regulate both sides accurately.

If I were stuck with little space and needed to get a fermentation chamber and a kegerator, I'd look into maybe buying two of the dorm sized fridges on the cheap. Stack one on top of the other.

Maybe there are some other ideas out there.

I've been pretty happy with the BrewJacket, which is not cheap but has a pretty small footprint (basically the size of your fermenter).

First off, I'll assume you meant kegs and not legs , imho, you need 2 separate chambers, unless you want to be constantly moving vessels or fucking with your temp controller. A multi-purpose chamber is a difficult solution to what is usually a simple problem.

Edit: where do you live (what are your ambient temps?

You wont be able to warm up the top while keeping the bottom at 38F. The cooling capacity is way too much. You have it backwards though, as the top half is typically where the cold air is produced and it falls to the bottom. So separating the bottom will make the top colder. And this has to be a frost free freezer, meaning air not coil cooled, with removable shelves.

You have to maintain 38F give or take a degree or two for keg beer dispense. Not 48F.

If you have the space for an upright freezer you have plenty of space for 2 separate units, with planning.

    Cheers.
