This Valentine's Day my girlfriend bought me a beautiful bouquet...of beer! (I know, she’s a keeper) The sixer she made was their last two Hopslam (apparently a worker tried to convince her not to buy it) and IPAs ($4+ a single). Unfortunately, two of the beers were gushers and the hops had pretty much fallen out of the rest of the IPAs. And this is not the first time I have gotten bad beers (gusher/skunked) from this bottle shop. In general, is there any good way of bringing up an issue like this without making a big deal of it?

I would just talk to the beer manager and let them know what beers it happened with. In my experience, they want to know what's going on with their stock, and the only way to find out is customer feedback.

I guess you could always right an anonymous email if you just want to be informative.

The few times this kind of thing has happened, I bring in the receipt, explain what happened to a manager or the beer guy, and they generally give refunds. I guess it depends on the store, but it seems like a refund would be appropriate, with or without solid proof.

its weird that he tried to tell her not to buy it, but still let her obviously knowing it wasn't going to be good. so why sell it in the first place? probably means that you talking to them about it wont make a difference since they know what they are doing

This is exactly it. There's a local shop I frequent that has quite outdated IPAs on the shelf. Just bring it up to the manager, that's all you can really do.

What temp are you opening your beers at? Gushers from infection are extremely rare, and they also have nothing to do with the store. Gushers from people opening at warmer temps are quite common. 2 out of 6, plus the fact that you say you have gotten multiple gushers from this store, makes me thing you're opening at cellar temps. Open at fridge temp (sub-40) and let it warm up a bit (doesn't take long) if you want to drink it at 55.

Now, stale IPA's, that's a major problem with the store itself.

Agreed. The only times I've had gushers were when I pulled straight from the cellar.

The opening temp was about 40 or so. One gusher was right out of the bottle, but the other just overflowed the glass with foam. But the beers were definitely stale. I checked out the stores BA Reviews and it seems like quality has been an issue with other customers.

I think the bigger question is why a worker would try to get you to NOT buy beer? GET AWAY FROM MY HOPSLAM!

according to my girlfriend he said it was "very rare" and that I probably wouldn't like it, even though she went in there looking for it. my guess is he was worried I wouldn't appreciate. i'm sure its not unusual for them to get girlfriends/wives that come in around the holidays looking for craft beer because they know their significant other likes Blue Moon and Killians. that or his plan was to buy those last two when his shift ended!

Seriously bad beer advocacy on the stores part. hopslam "very rare" i almost spit my bcbs out, hahaha. Your girlfriend sounds like a true keeper, my soon to be wife bought be temptation and pliny for my birthday. It was then that i knew she was the one.

It could've been one of those stores that only got a few cases. Those stores were selling SINGLE bottles to people. Sad really.
