Never had the beer. I can't speak for that choice, but pilsner is a good base to use with citra. They play very well together.

Well since Switchback was specifically producing a Citra-Pils beer the use of Pilsner Malt was sort of mandatory.

Which malt to choose here is very much dependent on the goals intended. Maybe using a neutral Pilsner Malt (e.g., Briess Pilsner Malt, Rahr Pilsner Malt) could 'work' here since that would showcase the hops. Regular old North American 2-row malt would accomplish this as well.

If you are looking for something a bit 'different' you could use Fawcett Pearl Malt (the 'house' malt of The Alchemist). Again, it depends in the goal.

    Cheers!

You can't really go wrong with any base malt (although, I'm not a fan of Munich malt when use at 100%, but that's personal). I like floor malted Maris Otter for all my hoppy beers these days.

Thanks! A friend of mine lives up in VT and LOVES Switchback as his everyday beer. I think I'll go pilsner or Marris Otter.

Here is the beauty of the smash, while most people assume ipa, the style could range from kolsch, to saison, to pils, to even a wheatwine. (Ok, wheatwine may be a stretch) I guess the real question is what style are you after?

Pils+citra+1056 gets you a hop forward smash focused on hops. Just hops. Nothing but the hops.

MO+citra+1318 gets you into the new england realm.
While both are good beers the 1056 beer gives you a clearer picture of citra vs 1318.

Would S-05 work in place of 1056? I'm doing a 1 gallon fun batch in my kitchen and have S05 currently

It will attenuate almost as well, produce some esters, but so what? It may be your favorite beer ever.

I have enjoyed the character of Briess GoldPils Vienna almost as much as I dislike the malt's name. Naming a malt brewed in Wisconsin after a malt named for a city in Europe is questionable. Naming it after two such malts for two different cities in Europe? Seems to lack originality. But I digress. I have done 100% with this and enjoyed. An upcoming batch uses 40%.

I recently did a Galaxy SMaSH that I am quite happy with. For the malt I used the Pale Malt from a Dutch maltster called The Swaen. Really nice flavor.

I hung out at my local shop during the town St. Patrick's Day parade. I grabbed 3lb of pilsner malt. I'll work the BS2 later to see what hop schedule I need for 3lb of pilsner malt. My buddy mentioned I shouldn't do Citra prior to 15min though

Any base malt works great with Citra. I made a 100% Vienna/Citra smash a couple of months ago with sacch trois yeast that came out fantastic. I think the all Vienna really stood out in this one!
