I'm actually not saying TH does do scarcity marketing, I'm just saying that their lines (or lines in general) do not automatically equate to "quality" and nothing more. I'm actually genuinely not trying to imply that TH doesn't deserve their lines, or that the line is artificially created by them. However, a line usually begets a longer line ("well if people are lining up for this beer, I guess I should too.").

And to use my example again, Half Acre has lines for beers that I'd say are of lesser quality (or at least less exciting) than some of the stuff from NW or Forbidden Root (no disrespect to HA, which makes plenty of beers I think are top notch), so I'm still of the opinion that there are many more factors to a line than simply the quality of the beer at the end of it. Is quality usually the most important factor? Of course.

Inherently, a brewery-only release is going to create more demand for a beer, because you have absolutely no chance to get it elsewhere (and it feels more "special," because you can only have it on location). Lack of distribution makes people work harder for a beer (at least, the ones willing to try, obviously), and people working harder for a beer creates lines ("if I'm making the effort to go to TH, I'm getting in line to make SURE I get what I want!"). That's really all I meant, not that TH is somehow undeserving or intentionally making their beer hard to get.

Plenty of Husky Pants at Binny's on Grand if that is one of your regular stops.
    Had one last night.
I don't know if I would say it is NE style?
    I don't know.
It pours 'cloudy' but definitely not turbid.
Very nice aroma, not very bitter but with a hop bite, nice flavor, soft mouthfeel, coats the tongue well. I quite like it and a good DIPA.
A game changer for the NE style in the Chicago region? Nope not all in my opinion.
A good DIPA worth trying? In my opinion yea.

Hah! It's not something I'm very stressed about. It's like a long distance relationship with a woman...I'd rather have someone local.

(I've had long-distance relationships before and mean no disrespect, btw :stuck_out_tongue:)

Had one last night as well, really enjoyed it but had a hard time trying to describe it but you did a good job, your last two lines sum up my feelings exactly. Glad I picked it up and glad I have another! Probably won't seek out more but would definitely go for cans if they brought it on to the regular line.

I wonder if @NOTpipeworks has any info on whether they plan to do something similar that we'd see here in Chicago.

The novelty comment with Heady was regarding its floaties. No one in 2011 was celebrating its floaties, quite the contrary really. Now, floaties/haze are revered. And I'm not saying Heady was not the highest rated beer, what I'm saying is that this whole NE Style craze can be attributed to Tree House, not Heady Topper, not HF, not Lawson's and not NEBCO. I agree that Heady laid the foundation for others like Tree House to follow perhaps but only with Tree House and its popularity did NE Style become a "thing". Tree House is the benchmark against which everyone judges turbid IPAs, not Heady Topper. IMO a more accurate descriptor is "Tree House Style" rather than "NE Style" as this is what most everyone is desiring anyway - from breweries to consumers.

If I could put 10 likes on this post, I would.

Maybe thats finally the kind of separate wordage we use for the beers when describing Chicagoland offerings. Is it 'Tree House style' or regular 'NE style?' Example, stuff from Shaun Berns would be 'Tree House style' whereas Hailstorm Cumulus would be 'NE style'.

Popped a 3/5 Cumulus last night. Stuff was excellent. Probably my fav IPA from Chicago and I've had them all except Juicy. I like a little bite in my IPA and Cumulus delivered. I will seek out more next time I'm in town.

Said it in the Mikerphone thread, but Mikerphone Check 1,2 just throttled a lot of pretenders. This makes the "cloud series" taste like dishwater.

I hope with his own space the consistency is better than the Une Annee days. I'm very optimistic...

i am in love with stratus and cumulus. that being said, mikerphone check is something special. i probably wouldn't buy much of anything else if this was readily available.

This is such a Chicago thing to say. When breweries can literally sell ALL the beer they make in a week from their brewery, why the hell would they distribute? The Veil, Tired Hands, The Answer, Other Half, Interboro, Sand City, Monkish etc. all sell beer only from their brewery.

On top of that, I actually completely disagree with your premise - just look at the truck chasers in this city. Mike's beers were gone from Warehouse in under an hour. Pipeworks BA releases, Spiteful's BA Malevolence, and the Fish series back in the day are all other examples.

The OP said Tree House was creating hype for their beer by creating lines. And that's a bullshit statement.

Thanks for misconstruing my prior statement. I did not say Tree House is creating hype by creating lines. I was stating that the Tree House lines and the associated hype with these lines (i.e., lines beget hype which begets longer lines, etc.) are part of the reason (along with brewing the benchmark for "hazy, juice bombs") as to why Tree House is the reason there is the NE Style desciptor imo.
