Hey everyone, I was wondering if there is any brewery kicking out decent NE style hops in or close to Asheville?

Burial would be my first thought. I'm not huge into hops though.

Burial is your safest choice, they're pretty much the only one I can think of that is currently trying out that style. I'm sure some locals could chime in though if they can think of anyone else.

Edit: Unless you consider a 2 hour drive close, then you could check out Heist brewery in Charlotte.

Newgrass distributes an Unfiltered IPA called Fiddler's Dream...but it's not very good IMO.

What IPA from Burial would people consider NE style? Granted I usually get their darker stuff, but I don't remember seeing an unfiltered IPA unless I'm just blanking.

One of the earlier Surf Wax batches had a hazy, unfiltered appearance and was quite tasty. Think more recent versions of it have totally different appearance though.

Didn't realize Surf Wax had changed appearance over time. According to my checkins, I had it back in summer of 2014 and then twice this winter. Pretty sure the ones I had this winter weren't hazy; no idea about 2014.

It's a gap and huge opportunity for breweries in the area to step up. In the past, Burial has kicked out some fantastic hazy and juicy batches of Gang of Blades, Massacre of the Innocents, Surf Wax and Hawkbill. Massacre is my favorite IPA of theirs but haven't seen it around for a few months. Most recent batch of Gang of Blades was not hazy at all and on the sweeter side (I was told a different yeast was used in that recent batch).

I'd say the haziest beer it town currently is Wicked Weed's Garcon de Ferme (brett farmhouse with peaches)

They just did a collab with Interboro from NYC (founder was guy who got other halfs IPA program up and going) called Stay G-O-L-D that releases April 7th.

I know this doesn't help anybody now, but I had a couple IPA samples a guy was pouring at Brawley's in Charlotte that were very solid hazy NE-style (one was a creamsicle IPA and tasted every bit like one). He said they were opening a new brewery in the South Slope district pretty soon (and this was a few months ago) right by Burial/Funkatorium/Green Man. Anybody know what this new brewery is??? If their production runs are as good as what he had pouring out of growlers, they'll be filling that niche nicely.

I had the fiddlers dream when it was fresh and it was pretty tasty. A little over a week later it was not the same.

The Surf Wax that was hazy was a fluke, Surf Wax is a west coast style IPA and should never be hazy. They weren't happy with that one not being true to style, even though it was tasty.

Gang of Blades was really turbid around Christmas, and I thought it was pretty good, but I liked the recent batch too.

I add a little half n half to my ipas and it makes it nice and hazy, just the way i like it.

By "they" are you referring to Burial?

Burials Massacre of the Innocents definitely fits the bill. Also Twin Leaf recently had a Strawberries and Cream ipa that i thought was very good. Bhramari had 2 "milkshake" IPAs last time i went that surprisingly were pretty tasty also. All of those are hazy IPAs.

Just went to Heist tonight, the Mo Citra, Motueka Problems is pretty killer and Citraquenchl is always good. Just wish there was somewhere doing this kind of stuff a little closer to home.

Hey I hear ya. We get one here in Raleigh every now and then when someone like Trophy or Bond Bros hits a homerun, but in between those there's not a lot to scratch that itch.

That's why I make my own. Can't get any closer to home than out of ones home. :grinning:
