That is based on what I could find from an old blog online ... no idea how accurate it is, but it at least made sense...

Honestly, I'm working on trust with this guy. So far in my shopping experience he's been pretty good about moving old stock (he has regular sales on older beer) and I haven't been disappointed in anything so far. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In my neck of the woods, it's on at a few places in the Twin Cities, and also at the Winzer Stube in Hudson, WI.

Thanks. I might be in the Twin Cities (NW suburbs) on the 14-16th, which is why I asked.

Okay, for what this is worth -- I just went on a mini Maibock hunt (semi) locally to see what I could find...which wasn't much.

But one spot had the HB with a code: 025 P. Based on your translation -- Jan. 25th of last year. This is why I'm wary of the HB Maibock (in most cases).
Glad you found a good one, most of the retailers I talk with about dates couldn't care to listen to it. They always seem to rely on the distros to "take care of things." Yeah, like that 2 year old 12 pack of SN Summerfest.

I was able to find a 6 pack of Hofbräu München Maibock at a local store, but I can't find a date on the bottles (they're green). Given the loneliness of the 6 pack, I fear it may be last year's (or maybe even older). I bought it anyway, but if it is too old, it would not be fair to use it in a tasting.

Do they date their beer? If so, where is the date and does it require a magic decoder ring?

    Thanks.

Look back on page 3 of this thread -- @FBarber has a post where he has the code translation (as far as we can tell).

FWIW -- I mentioned above that I also found some of last year's batch on shelves. Seems an epidemic with that beer.

In the picture below you'll see that there's a dating code on the back label.

the first 3 numbers after the L stand for the day of the year on which it was bottled and the letter after that number stands for the year. "Q" is for 2017 since its the 17th letter of the alphabet.

Maibock = Maibock Thread, right?

Or I guess you could always go old school... and write it down? :stuck_out_tongue:

I haven't had much luck either, but Primator is a Czech example that sees National distribution, and Trader Joe's has their Spring Prost out now. I know they don't seem highly desirable, but both SHOULD be relatively easy to get. Prost!

I mentioned the Spring Prost a couple pages back -- it's not a bad choice (especially for the price), very close to the HB Maibock in its robust character.

The beer is bottled for them by Gordon Biersch of California, it's the same beer as the GB Maibock.

Funny, stuff like that and Rochefort, Westmalle, Samichalus, St. Bernardus are not even around here.

    Cheers!
