All out of passenger pigeons, but I think I can get my hands on a native American blanket and some firewood. :grinning:

How about a growler at the pub?

Sorry -- just looked, pub's not exactly in your backyard.

Lakefront maibock has hit shelves in Chicago - saw it on Beer Menus and at Binnys today.

Was going bananas trying to find examples of the "traditional" style. Luckily, found three Colorado examples so far:
    • Maibock - Prost Brewing
    • Maibock - Strange Craft
    • Hideout Helles - Pug Ryan
I also have some Dead Guy (although an "inspired" maibock, it's a hybrid (ale yeast)) and Abita's Andygator (but that is labeled as a "helles doppelbock").

I sure would like to find an actual German maibock, but none of my local haunts seem to have any of yet. Prost's maibock should be closest to a classic offering of the style. In any case, I'm looking forward to this Satrudday's online tasting (especially since that will be my Friday - work-wise)...

    Found some:

    Abita Mardi Gras
    Copper Kettle Brewing Helles
    Pug Ryan's Hideout Helles
    Rogue Dead Guy Ale

So I'm guessing these all count?

    Cheers!

re: the Hofbräu München Maibock I bought... With the aid of my modern technology , I remembered... anyway, it is stamped L 16 Q 07:44, so it is the same age as @FBarber's - Jan 16, 2017. I couldn't wait until Saturday, so I sampled one, and it came across as a bit old, kind of flat.

I'll try another tomorrow during the "official" tasting.

Not consistent with my experience, let alone the dating. Hmm.

Huh, I haven't tried either of my two bottles yet - I'll have to wait until tomorrow to do so. I'm curious to see how mine are. just curious - but what do you mean by "old"? Like flavor?

It was due to its flat feel, not taste, like a loss of carbonation (but it had visible bubbles and a tall head, so ... )

Thanks for the code information. This was the only one I have been able to find. (Bocks in general have been harder to find than KBS this season). Even though my buddy just got some delivered to the store last week, I figured there was no guarantee that it was new. I really wish some more smaller breweries would make more of an effort to represent this style.

Also saw a sixer of Andygator, but did not want to buy that much.

    Cheers!

Just went to the one place I know that always carries HB beers. No Maibock. :astonished:

I hope your experience with this year's isn't a sign of something awry at HB. What color was the beer, and did it have a bigger malt character than the usual Maibock (say, Schell's?) and a slick, almost syrupy mouthfeel?

FWIW -- I picked up some Schell's and a new local from Kenosha, WI: Rustic Road Brewing.

Full disclosure: the brewers at this new pub are old home-brew club friends, so I fully intend to enjoy this beer! :grinning:
