750ml bottle poured into a snifter. The nose on this beer is really fantastic with a lot of barrel. After taking the first sip, the thick mouthfeel with moderate carbonation really stands out and tells me immediately this is going to be a big beer. The taste starts out with a lingering sweetness with some warmth in the finish but not a boozy finish as one might expect. Overall, Double Barrel Bolita takes an already fantastic base beer and makes it near perfection with the barrel aging.

Edit: I was going to mention, I actually ended up really enjoying sipping that Dissident with the "dregs" - upped my overall a notch by the end of it.

Ok, onto my last beer of the night - at least the last new beer. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by this one, though I think on another day I could have marked it down for the same things I gave it plaudits for today. Either way, it'd be within .1-.2 of my high rating, numbers-wise. I'm eagerly awaiting another chance on another day to see if I feel the same (I looked for @WesMantooth's review on this, but didn't see one, though @superspak did have a review of it):

I started with a little palate cleanser in a nice little half-shot glass I just found that my parents got me in Poland. The bourbon is bad, but a quick half shot and some water did leave my palate refreshed.

What I found nice about this beer is that it seemed true to its base beer as I recall it. If you've had an Imperial Biscotti Break and liked it, I feel you will like this beer. It is a bit more full in body, a tad more thick. The maple and bourbon barrels which I thought might take over the beer actually seemed to work with it quite well.

The maple came wafting out of the bottle at opening. The GF even noted, "I really get the maple" as she grabbed her glass. I am not sure if the maple was a temporary shroud, but it didn't seem to stick around (or at least lost the bulk of its forces) by the time I stuck my nose into the beer.

After finishing my review, I did look at other reviews and while I'll likely never get as much from any beer as @superspak, I did notice an overall impression of thick brownies that others had noted. Personally I think the maple and bourbon lay a little groundwork up front without demanding much attention. They support (with an equivalent added heft) the raisin, coffee, and vanilla notes of the base beer.

As a complete beer, I really enjoyed it. The GF, whose top 3 beers that aren't IPAs include the regular version of this style really liked it, but laughed when I asked if she liked it better. I think its nostalgia to a degree - I'd love to give her a blind tasting and see what she said then .

This is the first bottle of this I've ever had.
    Peach! :grinning:
Thanks to Sven, my Quebec connection! :sunglasses:
I've had a small sample of this before on draft at Three Penny Taproom, Montpelier, VT on Peche Day last year, but I'm liking the bottle way more! I was told by one of the brewers a couple years ago that they were toying with the idea of this because many Americans thought by the name Peche Mortel that it had peaches in it! :astonished:
    I love those guys!:stuck_out_tongue:

Vigorous pour yields a one+ inch light tan head over a dark brown body. Nose of peach, roasted malt, chocolate, smoke, and coffee. Taste is nearly identical with a nice feel and overall, as far as I remember, this bottle is better than the draft sample I had on Peche Day last year.

Well either way I wasn't trying to send anyone an old ipa. Just told him what the store told me it was fresh then other guy said November maybe they got it then. To much beer going on to know the release dates of every beer in Michigan. Honest mistake, i tried

Time for beer #2 and another from my trip today.

Stillmank Brewing out of Green Bay - Perky Porter.

I first heard about them yesterday when I was researching breweries in eastern Wisconsin. I saw a 4 pack of this in a store in Wassau, and decided to get it. It's not bad, but I've had better coffee stouts.

    3.71/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 3.75

This beer pours a very dark black color. The head is 3 finger, frothy, and brown.
The nose is fairly bland. I get something, but I really don't know what.
The taste is a lot better than the nose. I get a nice rich coffee favor. There's not too much else to it, except a slight chocolate note to it.
This is a fairly full bodied beer. Not watery at all.
Interesting beer. First one from this brewery. I would be interested in getting more from them the next time I'm in eastern Wisconsin.

It is under 12% - that is/was the threshold, no? Assuming you have no other means of getting beers that through OH distribution . I'm leaning towards one I know you can get for my closer over on WBAYDN.

Thanks for your input guys. Like I said, I'm fairly new to Bourbon Barrel Aged Stouts so my palate is still figuring things out. Right now I'm going simply with what "tastes good" and Dragon's Milk was something that simply tasted good and was less boozy than BCBS so in my mind it was actually more enjoyable. But I also used to think that Blue Moon was the best wheat out there until... well, until I started drinking more and more of the other available witbiers (and paying more attention to the subtleties of their flavor profile) so now I certainly don't think so.

You are correct about the former cap. You are also correct to assume that if it says maple on it, I have seeked it out.

Getting a late start to my NBS. But I have a packed lineup to make up for my tardiness. See if you can catch today's theme as I move from glass to glass.

First up, Detroit Dwarf from Old Nation Brewing
    [IMG]

I have been living in Metro Detroit for two years now to attend grad school, and I am so close to being done. It is looking as if I will move back to the mid-mitten once it is all said and done. I little homage here to the Nain Rouge celebration in tha D.

It has a nice, deep amber appearance. The aroma is toasty and grainy, with a hint something that I can only describe as metallic. It is not terribly off-putting, but still is off. I get this sometimes in malty lagers, so not a real surprise. The flavor is richer than the aroma, but has the same toasted malt and grain notes as the aroma. It is semi-crisp for a lager. Overall, it is very drinkable and went down fast. I don't know how old this is, because there is no dating. If it is not so fresh, that might explain the off note I got and the lack pop the flavors seemed to have, even given the style. If I could find this on tap, or a bottle I know is fresh, I would try again.

    3.73/5

    Back in a flash, NBS!

I wouldn't presume that my palate is somehow superior, or that your preference is based solely on inexperience. You're not the first to prefer Dragon's Milk to BCBS, even among professional tasters! It's not my favorite, but I do think it's a solid beer. And more importantly, like Corey said: it's all about drinking what tasted good to you.

    Cheers!

    Metropolitan Krankshaft Kolsch

I had high expectations for this one because @TongoRad praises it. Even though he is super untrustworthy, I fully trust him.

I think this beer can hang with the German beers that inspired it.

It's hazy relative to the imports. It's got some of the corn sweetness that I get from other Kolsch beers at the front (like Reissdorf). The hops take their time to hit, but when they do they come on (relatively) strong with a spicy bitter finish. There's also a bit of (yeast derived?) fruitiness. I feel like this beer takes aspects of different German Kolsch beers and combines them into this single beer - but it is also never muddled or loud. This one goes down very well.

    Mosaic Dry Hopped Pseudo Sue

Getting in here a little late on my second week as I was traveling all day.

I've had all the other versions of Sue (both Iowa and Florida) and finally got my hands on a fresh bomber of this. Not nearly as thick as the Double Dry Hopped, but still a nice color. Taste is definitely a little bitter at first, but still very smooth.

Personally, this is my least favorite of the Iowa sues (King Sue, Pseudo Sue and Double Dry Hopped), but it's still very drinkable. I'd rank them Double Dry Hopped, King, Pseudo, Mosaic Dry Hopped,

    Cheers!

    New Broccoli and Cheddar Sunday

Checked out a pair of new beers from Other Half Brewing this evening, Broccoli and Cheddar, IIPAs coming in at 7.9% abv, canned 3/24 and 3/23 respectively...
...and, no, I didn't combine them in any way other than in this post... :stuck_out_tongue:

    Broccoli
Pale hazy gold, opaque beneath a big white head that trailed lots of lace behind. Aromas of citrus pith suggested dank grapefruit. The feel was soft and tingly, medium-light body. Flavors were appropriately citric, dulled with earth muskiness but offering plenty of tang. bitterness and sweetness were moderate to mild. Drank super-easy with the bitterness more apparent on the finish. Real nice stuff, featuring Cascade, Mosaic, Hallertau Blanc, and Simcoe hops...

    Cheddar
On the heels of Other Half's Broccoli IIPA... Similar appearance, opaque grapefruit juice but with a big foam head and lacing left behind. This, too had rather dank grapefruit pith aromas predominate. The feel was softly smooth, with a little less tartness and a more pronounced drying effect. The flavors had much of that grapefruit-like quality, but with more of a tropical smoothie element at play. The sugars seemed a little more pronounced up front, but again, dried out considerably, and finished with a stronger dankness than Broccoli. Another super-solid beer, this one featuring Citra, Kohatu, Wai-iti, and Ekuanot hops...

I've got one more new brew in the fridge, and I'm not going anywhere, so stay tuned...

I haven't had that one yet but it's nice to see Greenport Harbor get some atention from @beerloserLI

They can be hit or miss, but in my book they are the Long Island brewery that deserves more positive attention on BA.

    Good Evening NBS,
Thanks for the poetic start @cjgiant,
I was really excited to pick this can up from my local shop Hillcrest Beverage, as it was my first Singlecut can purchase. The fact that it's in a can lowers the price.....just a bit.

L- pours a clear brownish-gold with thin white cap, lacing as well
S- tropical fruit salad, noticeably papaya, some pine as well
T- sweet cream, followed by this amazing blend of tropical fruits interwoven beautifully with pine
F- light to medium bodied, high carbonation, no alcohol burn despite 8.2%
Overall can't ask for much more from Singlecut, amazing new style tropical fruit, with outstanding old style pine, also perfectly balanced.

Part of the beauty of this thread is the encouragement of discussion of beers. Sometimes another person's new experience with a beer that another individual has had sparks a memory and a desire to talk about it. I think I've done it a couple times today, in fact.

I love this aspect, and hope everyone is open to other's opinions without there being a right or a wrong, like you all have seem to demonstrated here.

    Cheers all!!
