Rue d Floyd has like a 4.7 average on here. Not sure how much better rated it could be

It's rated exceptionally high for BA at the moment. The BA Score is dependent on other variables, like number of ratings/reviews.

    Here is BA's explanation:

    BeerAdvocate Overall Score (BOS)
The BOS is a proprietary weighted point (not percentile) system that represents the final overall score for a beer or place. Its purpose is to help make some sense out of the rAvg (1-5 based review average) and provide consumers with a quick reference when comparing one beer or place to another.

    BOS Range

    95-100 = world-class
    90-94 = outstanding
    85-89 = very good
    80-84 = good
    70-79 = okay
    60-69 = poor
    < 60 = awful
    Notes:
    • A beer or place must have 10 or more reviews in order to receive a BOS.
    • Individual member reviews are not given a BOS.
    WR (weighted rank)
A Bayesian estimate that pulls data from millions of user reviews and normalizes scores based on the number of reviews for each beer or place. The WR represents the beer or place's score against all others. WR is used to help generate the BOS.

Long story short, they credibility weight the average for the beer with the average for the style. For example, if only 2 people rate a beer and give it a 5, that's not enough reviews to credibly give it a 100.

Also, I think they made an abosolute shit ton of it.

When they first made it a few years ago, it was 1 bottle per person and it sold out almost immediately.

This year, it was a 4 bottle limit, and it's still available after a month. For the first week or so, people were driving hours to get it. I just think the supply is huge.

And in regards to the BA score, it just doesn't have enough reviews currently. BA weights the score out of 100 more heavily the more reviews are written. It's avg is 4.6, which is about as high as it can be.

I did not care for the gin BA version at all. I got very little of the hoppy base and all residual sweetness and gin/juniper. Granted, I'm not a fan of gin to begin with, so that's what my senses focused on.

Heard a similar thing a while back. Seems like there's an abundance of these bottles.

-Rue was/is ABSOLUTELY worth the $30 it commands.
-I reluctantly paid $40 for a BA Behemoth, haven't tried it yet but had one last year and it was good. "Worth" 40 dollars? I dunno, it's good.
-And lastly, aren't all FFF BA beers usually $40? I'm also pretty sure the BA Alpha Klaus and Moloko weren't $50

Agree on Rue. Wish I would have bought more when I was in town. Had it on draft, it's outstanding.

I bought two of the Rue while at FFF a while back. Traded one off so that tomorrow a Rue from the Bruery will be here. I plan on doing a side by side. I want to say I will save it for DLD, but I will likely just drink them this weekend. Sent the guy that I traded with a BA Behemoth. We were on an agreed dollar trade. I hope I didn't screw him with that 40 buck beer. He could have had a lot of Upland/Taxmann/TinMan for that. lol

At what point does a porter become a stout? Rue is thick as hell and like 14% ABV.

I think Moloko and BA AK were $40/ea, like Behemoth.

It's definitely world class. I've had one bottle and have four more on the way. Working a deal for three more after that. I want bottles of this stuff for years to come. Only reason it hasn't sold out is because they made a metric shit ton of it and $30 is more than many people are willing to part with. It's $2 more than I paid for Brandy BA Abyss and it's miles above that, IMO.

    Agreed.

At the point it can be poured cold without a thin, watery mouthfeel. It tasted like a BA Alpha Klaus cherry clone. Alpha Klaus is I believe a 6% abv porter. Letting it warm up for an hour in a glass didn't help. I didn't get thick from it at all, maybe mine separated because the 24 hours later I polished off the remaining 1/3 of the bottle and it was substantially better.

The distinction between Porter and Stout is almost brewery trolling these days. I've had 4-6% "stouts" thin as paper and 15% "porters" that felt like pudding. It's ridiculous. It's like calling a 9% IPA a pale ale or refusing to call it a DIPA.

Straight trolling by the brewery because the origin of the use of "stout" in brewing history is to mean "stronger version of."

Well, looks like I am going to have to get some Rue to try.

Thanks for all the comments. Nice to hear some additional feedback. That said, I will try to mute my expectations somewhat, as I suspect that a lot of the reviews made (and obviously comments here) are by people that are huge fans of 3F, and therefore going to be somewhat biased. But that's ok! Even if it is only 80% as good as it sounds like, still sounds like it's worth trying at least once =).

    Cheers.
