Okay, am I odd I wonder....???......

Rothaus Pils.....reviews give it a great name however I utterly despise the taste of it! Tried it again tonight and while it was well chilled it was non offensive however halfway doing I ended up pouring it away. Horrid.

2 friends thought it was terrific while on it in Freiburg but again I thought it was not good.

    Am I odd?!

Any chance it was old? Would you describe it as skunky at all? I prefer Herren Pils (or Faessla Gold Pils) but I still think it's a really good beer. It's better than most of the Munich pilsners and is a nice counter-point to Jever's extra-dry profile.

When I was living in Deutschland, lots of places wouldn't take American credit cards because they didn't have chips. I was wondering if things had changed with American cards switching to chipped cards but I guess not. Be prepared for this to be the case at some of the other places you go.

Skunky doesn't = old, skunk is a byproduct of too much light on hop isohumulones.

Yes, was the same at Spezial last night, where I sampled the Lager and Märzen.
No pic of the Märzen, as I was joined at my table by 5 German tourists ,and stopped taking pictures. They spoke very little English, and I even less German, but it was a fun evening, and my new friends insisted on buying me a schnapps to end the evening.

Most places won't take any cards at all and, if they do, they hate to do it and it may be a long drawn out process. Many impose a minimum amount and be sure to add the tip BEFORE they run your card, or else give the tip in cash, which is preferred anyways.

When we're in Germany about the only thing we put on the credit card is hotel rooms and maybe train tickets. Everything else is cash which seems to be the customer there.

Well, you are certainly different from your friends and from me - I have always greatly enjoyed drinking Rothaus Pils whenever I get a chance. A beer bar local to me had this beer on draft a few weeks ago and I ordered several pints of it (and smiled as I drank them).

Are there other Pilsners that you like?

    Cheers!

I was thinking more of either/or. In terms of bad beers I've gotten in Germany, they've either been old, skunky, or (in the case of draft) the lines had gone south.

I remember you mentioning old beers. Where was it you got those?

They were from beverage shops (and one bio market). They were a small % of what I got, but they were extremely oxidized tasting. Two even had diacetyl, which is/was non-existent in other bottles I've had. Never had an issue with random convenience marts or grocery stores, though. I think that's what I plan to stick to this next time. I don't typically bring much back from Germany, but if I bring a few back they'll probably be from a grocery store that gets a lot of traffic.

K, so the 90-day reservation theory is true. Within 90 days of your trip, tickets on the main train routes include seat reservations. Looks like the "local" train from NBG to Bamberg doesn't do reservations, but Munich to NBG definitely does.

We went ahead and booked a full day in Salzburg, which I'm excited about. In addition to Augustiner, it seems like Steigl is within easy walking distance. Is that worth a trip or is it just a production brewery with a quick tour? It's 12 Euros per person.
I'm very familiar with their gold and pils, but it looks like they're making all sorts of stuff now. Any of it particularly notable?

I'll bump this just in case anyone has an opinion.

    Stiegl - worth a visit?

We'll be arriving around 11AM and Augustiner Salzburg doesn't open 'til 3PM. We're 100% open to anything fun and within easy walking distance of the Hauptbahnhof.

Just my $.02 but I think Stiegl makes one of the best (mass produced) German-style pilsners available. I'd go to see what else is "brewing" (haha) and get some super fresh Stiegl.

It's worth if just for the view of the city. We didn't take a tour. They had 7 or 8 beers on tap (IIRC).
