Boy, I sure hope this isn't the case, my Beer and Wine store guys would be REALLY pissed at me. I do tip them though when they pour me a pint, love NC laws that allow beer retailers to also pour beer and wine!

Somewhat related, I do find it a bit awkward to leave the traditional $1 a beer tip at bars/taprooms. In Boston it's nearly impossible to find a decent beer under $7, and many places are charging $8-10, or more. You end up looking like some cheap asshole for leaving $1 on a $9 12oz. pour. Service isn't any better or different if I asked for a $6 Harpoon, so why should the tip be different? I may be cheap and I may be an asshole, but those are generally independent of one another.

Is the service better if you buy a Filet Mignon or get a side salad as your meal? Probably not yet you tip more for the steak than the salad...

No tip on cans or bottles to go, but I do $2 on growler/crowler fills. My standard tip for drinking at a bar is $1/pint.

Yes to Filling Growlers, no to go Cans.

Usually it is. But I know what you're saying. The price disparity on beer has become so wide that it begs the discussion of tipping per pour or % of bill.

Yeah I specifically chose different items at the same restaurant for bill cost differences because obviously service at a white tablecloth is different than olive garden.

Yeah it is interesting on how we should tip. I've actually always tipped 20% on bar tabs just because I always pay with my card and its easier than counting up the drinks...

As someone who works at a taproom that does pours for here and growlers fills AND cans to go (that maybe CA law specific) and also as someone who depends on tips for rent, food, and other stuff (aka beer) I appreciate a $1 tip on pours. However, if you don't tip me at all, I'm not going to be upset, I understand our beer is not cheap, and different people have different customs. Not being mean is the most important part.

Growler fills can be time consuming, and when there is a line, this requires extra work and slows down helping other customers. Doing this extra work, especially filling strangely shaped growlers deserves a tip in my opinion. Cans, however, is just like any other retail.

I was recently talking to a friend who is in the restaurant industry. He was telling me he always tips on food pickup orders as well. A lot of time and energy can go into assembling a pickup order. I just recently started tipping $1-$3 on pickups.

I'll tip folks that I believe are underpaid simply because they might be tipped, or happen to work with those that might be tipped. I was in this position myself in high school, making way under minimum wage as a dishwasher, simply because wait staff do get tipped. It sucked except for the few times waitresses shared tips. While I think there should not be lower wages in those circumstances, we must all be prepared for the higher prices that we'd be charged if they made minimum wage.

Local place that is package and tap has one register so it always comes up. When you buy package the guy quickly hits the "NO TIP" but it is up to me when package and tap. The place is pure honor system for tap--not many places like it.

I will point out that while working for tips your wage may be really low a lot of tip workers make more money than you realize.

Without much effort I made 300 a week working Saturday brunch, Sunday brunch and inner and Monday Lunch and Dinner. 3 days a week and not a busy night in the mix. If I worked Friday and Saturday nights I would have come out with double or triple that.

That was my first service job working part time and without any experience and not at a top top high end restaurant either.

I tip very well for bartenders (especially at my local bar) and good service. There is the idea that good work should be rewarded more than poor work and blindly tipping encourages the poor service servers. Though we must always be cognizant of the fact that busboys and others get a cut of the tips too..

Tipping for beer is not the norm in the UK either. It would be politely refused.

As someone recently retired from a business that has no tradition of being tipped, I was tipped often and generously by thankful folks who appreciated me doing the good job I did in crappy working conditions. This opened my eyes to the true meaning of tipping, and I have done the same to others. I often tip folks, like at my local beverage store, because I appreciate them. Funny thing is when you start doing things like this the blessings all come back to you. It is the least I can do in a world that has turned into a thankless one in many respects.

Since Aslin is 100% takeout, I hope they aren't requiring their employees to rely on tips so the situation there is different than many breweries. I don't tip on can purchases.

I've never thought about tipping on To go food, I guess the same logic applies to throwing a few dollars on a large bottle or can purchase.
