Actually I'd say they are very different.

At the restaurant the people providing the service are being paid tip wages, even though you didn't get the full service their labor is still being compensated below minimum wage and you've taken time away from their servicing their tipping customers.

At a bottle shop they are paid at least minimum wage and are not relying on tips for their income. Very different circumstances. If we tipped on bottle or cans you would have to tip for every retail purchase you make every day... You can see the absurdity in that I'm sure.

It's pretty much graded on the effort that's put into it.

    20% on a bar tab

    10%-15% on a growler fill

Couple bucks if I'm buying cans from a brewery and they're going grabbing them for me.

Zero if I'm bringing the beer to the register and getting checked out.

Classy move by singlecut pressing no tip in advance.

Some places that use tablets also have one and two dollar options on top of the % options. The places that don't are probably missing out.

I meant when buying bottles or cans to go at a taproom setting where they are paid below minimum, I would tip at a standard grociery or liquor store.

But are they paid tip wages at a taproom? Are the bartenders paid as bartenders? Also the person who cashed me out at Allagash was just a regular brewery employee last weekend. I would be curious to know how it is structured, are those people that serve you bartenders or are they brewery employees pouring drinks?

That would be a question for the brewery. Honestly I'm not worried about it, it was $3 on $50 worth of bottles.

Yeah its not a big deal unless we are now tipping non tip-wage employees basically acting as a common retail employee. If this spread we'd be tipping at 7-eleven, grocery stores, etc... Then it becomes expensive.

I don't mind supporting a brewery I love and its employees, i'm more concerned about setting a precedent that spreads beyond those breweries into general commerce..

I definitely agree, a lot of the time at a taproom you're not sure if they are a tip wage employee or not. It would get expensive to tip everytime I buy something, but when I'm not sure I'm okay spending an extra $1-3.

Just stopped by singlecut now for their can release and they did the same thing. Selected zero tip before asking for my signature. They also don't have a tip jar either so I tend to tip a little more since I stay for some beers on tap.
