Whoa, whoa, whoa. Yes, I was inquiring about trade value. Yes, if there was value here I would look to trade it, why because I have access to it. I had no freaking clue that it was so readily available, does that make me a bad guy? No, it makes me new to craft beer world. Do I enjoy beer any less because of this? No

I bought 2 abt 12, one to drink, one to possibly trade or hold on to or whatever. I drank one last night and I now know why it's so highly rated, it was damn good. And, so what if it didn't work out trade wise but now I have another great beer to drink. Someone said trade like baseball cards, what's wrong with that? If I can trade beer from my local area (Chicago) to someone out West or on the East Coast how does that make me a bad guy? Why would it be wrong to trade for something that I can't get at my local beer store?

So... maybe I worded my original post poorly. But Jeez guys, come on down off your high freaking horses and give me a break. I explained early on in my responses that I was doing my homework on this and I had not seen anything on beermenus.com, or BA that would've indicated that this was a fairly easy bottle to find.

So, back to my original question about value of abt 12... I now understand that if I can gather about 200 abt 12 someone might want to trade me a KH? jfk

BTW... I'm so glad my question has created such a debate. I can't wait... next I'll be blamed not only for the "beer economy" but the entire world economy.

He wants beer out of his distribution...he's asking if something he has access to can get him that. It might be naive given the beer in question, and the language "What is it worth?" might be a little grating, but you're assuming too much about his motives. He just wants to trade.

Clarity will usually dispel assumptions. Here is what we have to go off of:

He's been on BA for about six months. Half of his total posts are in this thread. The other half are trades of/for higher wanted beers. He's asking about a beer that is not challenging to get for most people in his area. He looked up that it doesn't get traded much.

So, he's a lurker that doesn't really contribute much to the community, but knows enough about the trading forums and the value of certain beers in his area. He also appears that he is trying to get some value from a beer he knows little about, and doesn't know many people on here, because knows it's highly rated--since he has looked at the top listed beers--but didn't think to BM a local and ask.

I don't give a crap what this guy does, but for those defending him--why? We can all speculate motive, but based on what I have to go off of, I'm not going to internet white knight it on this one.

Here's what it boils down to. If I was completely off-base with my post, why so many likes? Oh yeah, because a lot of us have seen this shit happen lately. I see it in other forums too - noobs milking the tree of knowledge quite obviously for their own profit. Those noobs deserve lashings.

Even if I was completely wrong about the OP, someone who knows nothing about a very common beer should probably not be spending his time worrying about trading. He should probably spend more time learning about beer. And if I was wrong, I apologize for the critical post, but seriously man, learn about beer before you start trading. If only for your own protection.

If you're that pissed about KHUs, then you should probably get ready to fight Overlord too...

I hear he's 7ft tall and can crush a man's skull with one hand. (and puts up da plates. prison yard style)

    You're probably right.

In that case the advice I give would be to first drink all the local beer, become knowledgeable about what he has available locally, try all the imports and out of area brews he can get locally, examine the trading scene, increase his skills as a taster, learn which styles he likes, and lurk on the trade forum for a long while, then think about trading.

Well, "a lot of us" have seen a lot of aimless anger & baseless assumptions being thrown at people who have the audacity to actually post questions about beer in a beer forum. Who do they think they are?

And it doesn't boil down to "likes" - that's a sad commentary on your world-view.

What it boils down is: did you help the OP out? Did you contribute something worthwhile? Were you being generous? Did you even vaguely give the OP the benefit of the doubt?

The answer across the board is no.

This I agree with wholeheartedly (as well as cavedave's post above) People, especially noobs, try to jump into the game too fast, & we end up with jojo & related cretins. But if we can help educate them, rather than ram our Internet jewels down their throats, well, that seems like the better course to me.

    Yes, yes, definitely.
You're right, but I'm just saying that in this case it's more a product of bad culture than a producer of bad culture, if you know what I mean.

My point was that many others on here agree with me. Some of whom are quite knowledgeable in regards to beer. Implying that I'm not pulling this stuff out of my ass - it's a real problem and many of us have seen it happen lately. It's hard to debate issues like this with someone that has trouble comprehending such simple concepts.

OK, if you want to continue to be a jackass, well, I'll say this reallllly slowly

You made vast generalizations. Huge assumptions. Laid into the OP as "people like this". Simply put, you were a plus-size big asshole. With ABSOLUTELY NO REASON, because you don't know jack-shit about the guy's motivations. You recently called someone else out for being a jerk in another thread. So add hypocrite to the descriptors..

I understand & agree with your point that there are lousy people out there; everyone who's been around a while knows that. You seem unable to grasp what I'm saying which is: don't make assumptions. And don't be a shit-head.

That was as clear as I can make this.

Don't. Make. Stupid. Assumptions. Don't. Be. An. Asshole.

Nothing new here, but probably the easiest way for a newb to get a handle on trade value is to run a search on the beer (Home > type beer name in Search box) and look in the right hand panel for that beer's Wants and Gots numbers. Your Abt 12 has 174 Wants and 414 Gots, indicating a relatively low desirability. Contrast that to Citra DIPA, which has 1,523 Wants and 36 Gots.

Notice that Wants and Gots doesn't necessarily = quality. As your taste buds have already figured out, the Abt 12 is one tasty beer, but due to high distribution, doesn't trade for much. Getting a handle on this craft beer dichotomy is one of the certified rites of passage for a newb.
