Jack's Abby has a lineup of Baltic Porters (Framinghammer) that have adjuncts of all sorts in them...and they're damn good, too. While not quite a doppelbock, they're close. Kind of like a doppel-schwarzbier I guess.

As far as American doppelbocks go, Bill Eye's have been pretty legit at DD, Prost, and Bierstadt. Uff Da from New Glarus is also damn good and has that flavor profile with a hair less kick to it.

Uff Da! Love that beer

I've had regular Framinghammer, really great beer for sure and I get what you're saying about the similarities. Will have to seek out the adjunct'd versions

It did seem that there was a lot of love for them 5-6 years ago but not much anymore. I remember there being a huge buzz when Prost relased theirs. I like one every once in a while, but I think the sweetness can boarder on cloying in even the best of examples. Probably a bit of a clash with the trend towards low abv, dry, &/or sour beers for the mainstream, but that's why we're on BA right?

Coconut framinghammer was so good, and I don't even like coconut.

There was that Ska/DC Brau collab a couple years ago that was a coffee doppelbock. I remember hoping to like it more than I did.

I LOVE doppelbocks, but I often think the huge BA-stout crowd would get their nads more pumped (sorry ladies...you can and should get excited about them too) about EISBOCKS. Very few around, but the 2 German ones available are easily among my all-time favorite beers (Schneider and Kulmbacher). Those who like quads and BSDA styles would find these beers worthwhile as well.

I probably shouldn't talk these up too much though, lest people start charging $12 a bottle or something.

Does anyone know of a CO brewery take on eisbock?

Only one I've ever seen was at Prost 3 years ago. Could be others, but I honestly don't know. Someone once posted something here about there being legal issues with it since it was a form of distillation.

Last time I was in Germany the Schorschbock beers seemed to have gotten more common. They were like €6 each, but they were in normal grocery stores. Not that bad, either. Outside of Schneider and Kulmbach, those are pretty much the only German examples I've seen.

From my understanding ice distillation is illegal as a brewery. Perhaps @dauss @rscot231 @Tarheel4985 @CerebralBrewing @TrveBrewer could weigh in on this.

Can confirm, definitely illegal. You would need a distillers license and you are not allowed to have both in Colorado.

Thanks for the info, and I guess trying a wider variety of eisbocks will give me yet more reason to visit Germany some time. I'm very happy to have access to the ones we do get.

I wish our local breweries could do an eisbock. I think it would reign king among the nerdiest of the beer nerds... like a beer version of battlestar gallactica.

Generally speaking, Eisbocks are a bit too one-dimensional for my tastes. I like Aventinus Eisbock, but the others just taste like a kicked up Salvator to me. Very malty, but without the figgy and molasses depth of say, Celebrator or Korbinian.

The style I'd love to see more breweries go for would be a landbier or country lager. Kind of like Mahr's U, New Glarus Two Women, Dovetail Lager, Zirndorfer, etc.
Essentially just a deep gold lager that's slightly sweet and with hops that only act as a balancing agent. Some are filtered, others aren't. I don't really think it matters to me.
Grimm Brothers is the only place I've had one in CO.

Grabbed a Montage variety pack this weekend and made the Nail Knot my first beer of the pack.

I think Odell nailed (not intentional play on words there!) the beer but cant say I am a fan. Too sweet for me. Anyone know if they are using corn in it? Remove the sweetness though and that would be, IMO, an absolute beauty of a beer. One I would be begging/pleading/screaming Odell to throw into their regular lineup.

Yeah, I think that's the direction they went with it. Remove the sweetness of it, I'd be a huge fan.

So drinking this one again tonight, this time as Beer #2 and from different glassware, and its a very different experience. This time around I am really digging it. Will be interesting to see what I think of bottle #3, which will have to be done on a fresh pallet.
