If I would've gotten one and someone offered me that kind of money, I'd have said "here ya go". We ended with 2 vanilla variants between 4 tickets. Shared one and brought one home.

Damn. I see where someone back in Chicago area is wanting $400 for his vanilla variant. Guess I should get to chicago and offer up mine.

I decided to crack open a bottle of Dark Lord last night as I never got the chance to try it at DLD this year. I can easily say that this year's Dark Lord is one of the best. Much more balanced and nowhere near as sweet as usual.

Reminds me of a couple years ago we told our plus 1 if you get the vanilla you could get a good amount for it. He gets 1 and before we know what was happening he had sold it for $60.

So this just dawned on me today...

With most major beer releases, say Bourbon County variants for example, we have some idea what's coming before the official announcement because of the label approval process.

Weeks or months of speculation on variants this year, but none of us beer nerds thought to look up the FFF label approvals?

I don't know what all goes into the label approval process, but I feel like that is necessary if you are sending the bottles into circulation. Since the DL variants don't get sent out, there's no need to get the labels approved... I have no real facts, I just feel like that's why no one ever found anything about the variants.

No need to get label approval unless you are shipping the beer out of state. These beers are sold direct from the brewery so no TTB approval needed.

I think they got TTB approval for Dark Lord once back in 2005 when a small amount was actually distro'd to Illinois.

Exactly what @kodt said. Brewery release only beers don't need label approval.

Given the lengths people went to create fake news, fake bands, and a fake beer release at the pub for this year's DLD, the better question is how did none of us beer nerds have time to make fake variant labels to post on here?

Gonna have to put this on the list of needed improvements for the DLD MMXVIII page.

I pretty much started making plans for 2018 as soon as I'd sobered up from 2017.

Saw the Dark Matter email in my inbox this morning, logged in at 6:30 AM & the Blood Lord mugs were already sold out! Snifters still available at that time, but I really wanted that mug.....

Is it too early to post the bottles I plan to bring to the share and to the fest?
