    Assuming you're going back to the US have a good and safe flight. I'm slightly envious, I too love airports, flying and traveling, but not this year I'm afraid.

    Much like I'm sure I'm not the only BA enjoying a breakfast beer, I'm sure I'm not the only BA with a Memorial Day thought today.

    My family doesn't have a tradition of military service. I don't think my kids will be partaking in any tradition-breaking, either; I'm OK with a streak of 1 in a row. :wink:

    There is, however, more than one exception to this familial tradition of civilian employment vice military service - a notable and noble exception. It is one we haven't really discussed since my grandmother died 15 years ago. Her brother and my great uncle, Charlie Hyder (PFC), died in Italy in WWII, in 1943.

    I honestly wish I knew more about the circumstances of his death, but we have few if any records. That side of the family came from rural Tennessee; we don't even know my grandmother's birth year for certain. Records aren't our strong point. :wink: Regardless, his death weighed heavily on her, and she remembered him fondly and forlornly to the end of her days.

    It is a good reminder, on this day, that veterans and active duty military have a day of appreciation of their own. This day is for the solemn remembrance of those who have sacrificed even more - the ultimate sacrifice here being neither an exaggeration nor a cliche.

    I don't know how many people will have Charlie in their thoughts this day, but there will be at least one.

    Thanks man! I'm actually going to Greece for a couple more days of unstoppable beer drinking and then back to the US. I wish I could bring some beers with me but since I'm traveling light and without checked luggage I had to drink them all here!

    Got up at the crack of dawn and lowered the flag to remember our fallen protectors of freedom, ran four miles and hit the grocery store. I'd say it's time for a beer before firing up the tractor to mow. Joining those in raising my glass to @Roguer and his departed Uncle Charlie. Take a moment to remember and thank someone who serves.     Good morning and happy Memorial Day, BA's. It's starting out rather dreary today and I'm glad we returned from the Shore last night and were able to sleep late and avoid the traffic today. I'm trying to get going this morning with some Imperial Beanhead. Hoping the rain stops so we can spend some time outside later.
