I've decided to treat myself, and have booked flights to Munich, landing on the 1st of November. I'll be over for 21 days, and was thinking of doing a few days in Munich, a few days in Bamberg and then...... well, I'm not sure really.

Was hoping for some advice, what towns/ cities in Bavaria/ Franconia would people recommend? I'll probably head to Berlin at some point, however I'm not wedded to that. Looking for towns and cities with great and authentic beer/ beer experiences - a museum or 2 never hurts either. Whilst I love drinking craft beer, that is not necessarily what I will be looking for on this trip.

I will also trawl the other threads on this and the other site.

November is Bockbier season in Franconia. Attending these -- and drinking the breweries' various other offerings -- will get you exposed to some really cool, out-of-the-way places. http://www.braufranken.de/html/bockbier.php

EDIT: I see the date for November 2017 haven't been added yet. Follow that page and you should get more info as the season nears.

Regensburg is pretty, and has some decent breweries.

Berlin is worth a good chunk of time. It has many museums worth your time. The beer scene is not exactly like Bavaria, but I read about the craft scene really taking off there.

Edit - as a seasoned traveler of Germany in November, take rain gear and warm clothes.

What about Prague? Short distance from southeastern Germany, great bier scene and stunning architecture....

    Prosit!

I'll be there in November. I have been reading some great stuff about the beer scene in Bamberg. Still researching - if you go to Munich, I recommend getting a copy of the "Beer Drinkers Guide to Munich" by Larry Hawthorne.

I have used this one to help plan my trips. There is a paperback version as well. http://www.lulu.com/shop/ronald-pattinson/trips-south/ebook/product-20638561.html

The Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich is an absolute must-have. Not only is it good at giving you locations to visit, it's also a handy resource for things like cultural quirks and even an MVV map. I own like 4-5 editions of it. I think the newest version was updated in late 2015, so it's current.

I purchased an eBook called the Beer Drinker's Guide to Bamberg, which is also a nice buy. I think I paid something like $4-5 for it back in 2011. Not sure if it has been updated, but it's maps were handy back in the era where international data wasn't an option. Like the Munich guide, it's also a nice resource for learning some cultural quirks you'd otherwise never know about.

I agree with Prague. Lots o see and do and drink there.
Along the way is Pilsen, though I have never stopped there.
Further away (about 90 minuter from Prague) is Trutnov. There is one brewery there - Krakonov - I was just there a couple weeks ago and enjoyed their beers a lot.
Between Prague and Trutnov there is an interesting historic site - the Skull Church (https://sedlecossuary.com/) which is worth a visit.

That is my booklet -- glad you liked it. The PDF version is still available (though it needs an update). It sort has been replaced by an app --- for both IOS and Android -- details at www.BeerGuideApps.com

And second the comments on Prague -- I just got back from a week there and it is amazing how much has changed (beer-wise) in the 18 months since my last visit. Something like 20 new pubs on my list (though much overlap)

I have been to Berlin before, other than 2 days in Frankfurt due to missing a flight, it is the only place in Germany I have been too. Absolutely love it, despite it perhaps not having the famed beer culture of other German cities, I do enjoy a Schultheiss or 2 in an eck-knepie (hope I spelt that right).

Just bought a new raincoat, thank you.

Thanks for all the advice guys/gals. I've pretty much locked it in as follows:

Nov 1-5 in Munich (staying in Berg Am Laim - good choice?)
    Nov 5 - 8 in Nuremberg
Nov 8 - 12 in Bamberg (doing forcheim and buttenheim whilst there)
Nov 12 - 15 in Dusseldorf (Altbier and Museums)
    Nov 15 - 19 in Hamberg
    Nov 19 - 22 in Copenhagen

Prague, Berlin were very tempting, but I have been to both before - I will hopefully return to both someday, had an absolute ball in both cities when I was there.

Any thoughts on this itinerary? I've not travelled a great deal in Germany, I will catching the train between all destinations, with the exception of flying between Copenhagen and Munich on the way home.

@jjboesen - What dates are you in Bamberg? I'll be travelling solo mostly and would be more than happy to meet up for a beer...bier.

It sounds like a fun contrast and great way to experience lots of different beer sub-cultures within Germany. Munich, NBG, Bamberg, and Dusseldorf will all be unique experiences in spite of them being in (relatively) close proximity by the standards we have in the US or you have in Australia.
Never stayed in Berg Am Laim, but I usually find that as long as the U or S Bahn is close by, Munich is easy to get around. Definitely look into the multi-day and partner tickets to save money.
Bamberg can be covered entirely on foot. Much/most of Dusseldorf can, too.
Never spent much time in Nuremberg, but if you're craving an American-style IPA I can vouch for the NBG versions. The owners/brewers are ex-pat Americans that know what they're doing and still have deep appreciations for German beer.

I've downloaded the DB app for intercity trips, where would I find multiday/saver tickets? Ill probably drink mostly Altbier in D'Dorf, but a good IPA might be a nice change up, thank you.
