I drink all my barrel aged beer as fresh as possible and store them cold and I've never had a problem with any Jackie O's beer.

These anecdotal "infections" are just as much user error as they are anything else.

Does this mean I am allowed to ask what the case count is and how long will it last?

I wouldn't throw that accusation around that freely. I'd be willing to say most people on this board completely understand how to take care of and store a beer.

For instance... After trying Poly 1 and 2 at Winking Lizard, I went straight to JO's and bought as much as I could of each. Had a bottle share 6 days later and the first Poly2 I popped completely exploaded and tasted like straight vinegar. I then grabbed another bottle from the same trip, opened it and it was fantastic.

Shit happens, EVERY brewery I've seen make amazing beer has also had some off/infected bottles and I never complain about random off-bottles unless breweries just refuse to accept it can happen or act shitty to the customer.

I'm not doubting weird things can happen from bottle to bottle but time brings out any latent issues. Why mess with that?

What exactly does why mess with that? mean? Are you suggesting someone who understands what an infected beer is should not ask whether anyone else has had such issues or whether they had a 1 off?

I hope I didn't come across as complaining, that certainly wasn't my goal it was more so inquisitive. I don't have regular access to Jackie O's so I'm not in the loop on any possible issues so I figured this forum would have plenty of individuals in the know.

It means why age barrel aged beer, especially ones with adjuncts.

I would have loved to try the beer fresh but didn't get the opportunity so when I found it available for trade I jumped at the opportunity even though it was a few months old as in my experience most good beers hold up quite well.

I'm not trying to bust you out specifically for aging beers that shouldn't be aged, but trading for year old beer comes with a lot of risks.

I fully accept those risks and didn't ask for a replacement bottle, just thought damn that sucks sounded like it was a good beer. I fully understand off flavors from aging or poor storage especially in a coffee beer but this wasn't a wet cardboard flavor or bad bitterness from old coffee or even just overly malty it was sour the type you smell the minute you open the bottle and say "fuck".

Also I've had many barrel aged coffee beers that were amazing after several years let alone several months so it's not so cut and dry as to say you shouldn't age them obviously the coffee will fade so if that's your main enjoyment by all means drink them fresh.

A beer might taste better with age. It might taste like cardboard. It might also get totally soured.

If the beer is good fresh, then for $1 an ounce I'm gonna stick with the sure thing.

One more question for you if Champion Ground as you say is a beer that shouldn't be aged why is Jackie O's sending me a 2015? Do they not know as much as you do about their beer or did they just happen to find a bottle they misplaced?

What is he preaching about? The whole to age or not to age beer debate that really doesn't need to take over this forum? Or the fact that beer can turn sour if you age it? Because if it's the sour part let's acknowledge the fact that a beer will only sour with age if the beer was exposed to something unintended or "infected"......now storing the beer in a fridge or cool place can slow the spread, however improper cellaring won't in and of itself cause a beer to be sour (unless its of course a sour) and of course drinking a beer fresh may allow you to enjoy it before it has started to sour but again a coffee stout won't just sour unless some type of bacteria or wild yeast was inadvertently introduced.

Brad has posted before why he thinks his stouts specifically will tend to be better fresh:

Alright let me stop clogging up this thread with my nonsense.

This is supposed to be about Jackie O's which again I think is a first rate operation and will always look forward to enjoying their world class brews!

I thank you all again for your input! and hope I got the one fluke Champion Ground bottle or hell I'd be fine just being wrong

    Cheers!

They probably have some bottles of 2015 Champion kicking around for a number of reasons. It's the first batch (I think) so they might just hang on to it, they know more about beer than even I do and they got to that level by experimenting on their own beer e.g. aging a few in controlled environments. Another reason for them still having some is because it's old and they won't sell old product.

As far as sending you one, they know the most they can do is give you a bottle that was stored properly and hope for the best. They won't be able to brew a new batch and put your name on the labels.
