What types of bourbon barrels does CW use? Does it vary between BBS, BBBW, and now BBSA? Or year to year?

I know they use Heaven Hill for aging their barleywine and stout so I would assume they are using the same barrels for their scotch ale.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the BA Stout and BA Barleywine. It tasted like they were in the barrel over the weekend, then bottled, not much going on in those. I would give this a shot though.

They are thin, but I think they have a decent barrel presence. For something that is easily accessible in Wisconsin, they aren't bad beers. Just don't try and compare them to something like a BCS.

I happen to really enjoy the BBBW

Had this over the Great Taste weekend and it was one of the best beers there. Big barrel presence in all the right ways reminds one more of 1414 than of the BB Stout in terms of barrel presence.
CW BBBW, 1414, Coffee Stout, Peruvian Morning and this BA Slainte are all way better than the BB Stout in my opinion.

    1414 was amazing.

Your opinion here should be suplexed off the top of the Hell in the Cell cage through a flaming table Abe!

I reject your suggestion to refrain from comparing: CW -bal stout > BCS

I just love CW stuff, especially the -bal stout. I'm guessing I'll probably be trading around 2-3 Black Tuesdays this year for a bunch of this local, shelf beer once again. I know I traded that much BT for it last year.

Not even the deadman himself will touch this stuff if it was the last beer available.

Your opinion does not agree with the masses. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/652/41300/?ba=oglmcdgl The stout is a little on the thin-bodied side, but the BW is hard to beat.

What I heard from Central Waters was that they use whatever barrels they get through the exchange and that they don't notice any significant difference for barrels from different manufacturers, just a difference based on the number of years that bourbon was aged in them.

I thought the BA Slainte at the great taste pre-party was a little too barrel forward, it overpowered the base beer, unlike everything else BA I've had from them which are all delicious and well integrated.

I respect your opinion but it was their BA Stout that started my craft beer obsession. I can still remember my ex-wife's reaction when I came home with a case and told her how much I spent. It was still quite a bit cheaper than her Coach purse, lol!

I understand. I probably need to revisit the beer, as I am definitely the minority here.

CW is my favorite brewery and they are local. I managed to get 13 bottles of their special release La Petite Mort and I have 7 bottles of their special release Exodus from last year aging.

Don't let them push you around boss! Just because you're in the minority doesn't mean you're wrong. As much as I enjoy getting behind Central Waters when they're good, the BA stout..in my opinion.. is not very good.

I also received this answer from one of the owners when I asked what barrels they use at a tasting. I would agree with their assesment, you can definitely taste the difference between various bourbons when you drink them straight, but I think any difference is bascially negligible once you've added a flavorful base beer.

I wasn't able to make it to CW's taproom Saturday but my texted me that BA Slainte they had on tap was excellent. He also confirmed that it will be bottled but I have no dates. I know a liquor store in Point is hosting CW then later that day CW will be taking over Guu's with at least 13 of their beers on tap with some special releases. Should be a good time.

Yup, should be a blast. I'm planning on making it up to point that weekend as long as I'm still in wisco
