They have English menus, and most staff knows basic English.... Should be no probs...

    Prosit!

Actually I'm in luck! I posted on TripAdvisor and someone informed me that the Anne Frank House has a separate ticket with an Introductory Program which involves a half-hour of information before admission to the museum. Those tickets only go on sale two weeks in advance, so on June 28, I am going to get us some!

That's great to hear about the Rijks. My father was high on that museum as well. And I'd liked the sound of the Rembrandt House, so I will keep that in my back pocket if we're looking for more to do. More than happy to let this last leg of the journey be a little more spontaneous and relaxed rather than regimented.

What is Vom Faß? Haven't heard that term before.

Simply means draft beer, literally "from the keg".

Very cool. So if I see Vom Faß on a menu, that's the one to go for. Thanks!

That's great to hear. The Anne Frank House is truly a must visit while in Amsterdam. Amazing what that family went through!
Have a great trip & don't forget to post a "post-trip" update, pics always welcome on this site!:stuck_out_tongue:

After shopping at the Aldi's in town, my wife came to the same conclusion about the checkout clerk. This was after she was rude to my wife, then rude to a German lady in her 80's.

Hit Duolingo hard. You will be appreciated if you at least make the effort.

    That is what we do.

That's what I did, but I could not get that app to recognize my speaking of the words and I gave up on that part. I did reach the point that I could recognize a lot of words on menus which helped if there was no English menu available.

We found many gruff servers (it must be a normal thing for them), but my wife is very good at asking nicely in English their name, like 'let's be friends' and it worked every time, especially when you say their name each time they visit your table.

Just reading through this thread, I think whoever you've been talking to has hugely undersold Rome to you, it's an amazing city to visit and the amount to see and do in a relatively small area is incredible seems to have a fairly decent craft beer scene developing too if you are able to spend any time there.

For Munich this video is worth a watch, these guys have some cool city guides

If you do the Irish trip I'm sure I'll be able to help you out for places to go for some quality beer.

The Aldi in Munich? I had the same experience when I told the cashier I didn't have a Pfennig for the DM 2.01 item I was buying. Just got an exasperated look and smiled back nicely.

Yeah, makes me think it's more an attitude of working at Aldi. The gruffness at Schneider seems to be "tradition."

Thanks for the video! I haven't gone on a YouTube quest yet, looking for "best X in Munich/Amsterdam" but maybe I should try that this week. I hadn't thought Tap House Munich was that special, but I'm glad I saw it in the video because now I'm much more interested.

We'll see how Rome plays out. I would love to hang around for a bit, but I have a feeling my parents and their friends are just going to want to get on the road to the Villa. I'll bring it up again next time I see them.

Nice, I'll get on that. I've got two-hour train rides each way to work every day, so I've got plenty of time to pick something up before we go!
Good to hear. I'm gonna be on top of that ticket page when they open up for July 12. And I will be sure to post a Trip Update. I could probably post my spreadsheets now, but I'm not sure whether I have any sensitive information on there that should wait til after the trip. Lots of good info that I would be happy to share for the next guy though.

I wonder who told him to call the Aventinus a "lager?" Maybe he just equates a Bock (Doppelbock) to lager? Nevertheless, make no mistake that the Aventinus is top-fermented... though it's stored for some time to mellow, so that's lager-like.

Ha yeah good point, in fairness he admits it was a mistake in the comments. It's a cool channel for anyone that doesn't know it, the guys put out some slick videos and have generally very good content.

Oh I am very excited for some fresh Aventinus. I still have the glass I took from the bar that night, but Aventinus and Weihenstephan were the two beers my best friend introduced me to the night that I learned there was more to beer than Bud/Coors. I want to take her out to a nice dinner that first night in Germany and then maybe to one of those brauhaus settings to imbibe and embrace some fun.

I've done fine knowing minimal German. If you can order beer, say yes/no, count to 3, and you know the names of the common foods you'll be fine. Especially in town and anywhere near Marienplatz. Andechs has a lot of tourists, so someone will know English even if the staff isn't all 100% fluent.
Duolingo's a great tool, but I swear it's like they keep the phrases you actually want to learn locked away in like lesson 30. :stuck_out_tongue:

Damn, I'm in worse shape than I thought, haha. I think I've got 'danke' out of that basic list, so I will try to grab a few phrases over the next two weeks. It's 2017, where's my Universal Translator?
