We participate in all the festivals we can manage and I have been a Washington Beer Commissioner for 7 years because I believe the festivals introduce more people to great WA beer and this is my/our service to continue to create the community that allows to exist...pay if forward.

I was the person behind Inland NW Beer Fest (Spokane Octoberfest back in the day) and Tri-Cities festival and pushed for the Tacoma festival in order to bring WA craft to underserved areas. It makes a difference and even more so when great breweries show up...it's a community thing.

Personally, if an event isn't allowing dogs, it shouldn't allow the Screeching Spawn of Satan either. Children can ruin others enjoyment quicker than dogs can. Eh, such is life.

Dogs are cuter, and smell better, than the chillens. So,if the kiddos are allowed, so should the puppers be allowed too.

If I can expand on what I think your point is: I love the fact that a lot of the small breweries I had only ever heard of, pour at this fest. I first tried E9, Iron Goat, and a bunch of other breweries, at this fest. This fest can create brand awareness. A brewery can also get lost in the crowd. At any of the big fests, Black Raven has the biggest, longest line. They bring stuff you could only get there, or at the tap room.

A place like HM, which is staffed by folks who have worked in the industry for a good long time, really has nothing to gain by being there. They have no trouble selling all their beer, they don't need to add to the hype. At this fest, I almost never go for the "popular" beers, I seek out the small breweries. I don't give a shit if a brewery can make a great small batch, one-off, I wanna know if they can make a solid, drinkable, enjoyable "everyday" beer. That's how I judge, YMMV.

Kids are a pretty low risk for biting others, or getting in fights with other kids.

Why would anyone bring a mule to a beer festival? You know there's no bottles there right?

While I'm not sure about the smell part (that usually depends on the dog's owner), I agree with everything else in your post. On occasion, I see what I perceive to be stupid behavior on the part of dog owners (picking their dog up and putting him on a dining table; putting bowls of food provided for attendees on the ground so that their puppy can have a bite), but that pales in comparison to what I see some parents do. Repeatedly, I find myself mumbling under my breath "what in the world were you guys thinking? Your kid (or kids) is clearly miserable, and now he/she is making everyone around them miserable (with their crying, screaming, throwing stuff, etc.)."

Not that it matters. I've been having these sort of conversations with myself for years, and I still continue to see the same behavior over and over again.

How long has it been since you were a kid?

People are in denial about both their pets and their children's behavior and how good of a parenting/pet ownership decision it is to bring them along. My kids are well behaved and would be fine but they hate tagging along to beer events so I don't bring them. My dog will sit and be good and won't bite anyone who isn't trying to take meat out of his mouth but that doesn't mean it's fair to take him along to crowded places where he'll get stimulated as fuck and not be able to do anything.

At the risk of sounding like I know how to read dogs' minds I'd imagine most dogs would rather be in their back yard smelling things, peeing, smelling things, and trying to catch bees mid-flight than they would "sitting and being good" for 8 hours with the equivalent of a dog smell-o-vision laser show going on around them.

There's a kids area at the WA beer fest. If you want to avoid kids, don't go over there. I have never had any problem with kids being a problem at this particular event. And I have definitely seen more dog-related incidents than kid-related incidents elsewhere.

Honestly, I think most outdoor beer festivals should be held at places with tons of shade (tree's, forest, etc). Especially if the temps start climbing. I just hate standing out in the sun for hours on end combined with sampling tons of products. Always a recipe for disaster if not careful.

Curious how the no-dog policy will be enforced at Marymoor Park. People can get very standoffish when enforcing no-dogs rules, especially a a park like Marymoor.

As a parent and dog owner, I would actually prefer beer festivals to be kid AND dog free, it's rare we get a goddamn break from both at the same time and drinking beer is far more enjoyable with neither around, IMO.

I have both a dog and a 3 month old so I'm basically the scum of the earth at breweries. In all fairness the mutt loves going to breweries (almost certainly the pretzels and/or doggy treats) and is a small, generally chill guy, and re: the demon spawn we don't hang around if he starts getting cranky.

Sorry for opening a can of worms, please continue talking about the important stuff.

I went to the kid free day (Friday) and kid full day (Saturday) and I can't say I even noticed a difference between the two days. The kid area was a bit off to the side so many kids played there and everyone was very respectful.

I disagree on the dog option, although I'd be cool with a dog friendly are in the fest. People are terrible at cleaning up dog poop, dogs and big crowds don't tend to mix very well, there's a whole lot of park out there still open and many, many dogs fight and bark at each other. Again, off to the side no problem.

Funny impression of the fest, it's actually thousands of slightly buzzed folks respectfully throwing their trash away properly and being very, very respectful towards each other's space. That being said, I can't see how letting pets in is a smart idea in the general part of the fest. A lot could go wrong with pets going after each other, but there's enough space for a section to allow pets in a controlled area.
