I first read about oat milk in the link above (despite the name, there's no dairy in it). The author approximates the gravity of oat milk as 1.046. My direct question is if I add 64 fluid oz of 1.046 oat milk, how can I convert that to PPG (points per pound per gallon) to add as a custom grain on brewersfriend (or other similar recipe building sites)?

While there certainly is a trial and error method (i.e. dialed in system --> don't add oat milk to brewersfriend = OG x --> Add oat milk during brew day --> measure OG y --> contribute the difference (y-x) to oat milk and work backwards), I figured with the given quantity and gravity, their must be a way to calculate the expected PPG contributions ahead of time. Google searches have not been helpful.

    TIA

It is 46ppg. The OG calculation shows the ppg sugar in one gallon of beer, so remove the 1.0 and you have the ppg of the sugar source. Treat it as a 1/2# sugar edition (roughly the same ppg), and leave your preboil volume 1/2 gallon short. If you input a 1/2# sugar addition it should give you the same contribution.

EDIT: 46 ppg is for a full gallon, but since you are adding 1/2 gallon, you will treat it as a 1/2# addition as you are only getting 23 ppg.

I don't think this answers your question, but we had a thread a couple months ago on oatmilk that might interest you. In comment #5, a poster suggests force fermenting oatmilk to determine its fermentability in isolation (advice I regrettably did not take).

Thanks for posting the linked article!

Awesome, thanks! I don't know why I didn't think of it that way.

Thanks for posting this link, I must have missed it. Mods... this thread could be merged into the existing oat milk thread if you were so inclined.

@209Hill you said yours came out boozy. What was the OG/FG and ABV?

I'm a partial mash / extract homebrewer who doesn't (gasp) take gravity readings, so I can't give you exact OG / FG & ABVs. I use software to build my recipes - this one was supposed to turn out at 8.8%, but I forgot to account for fermentability of the oatmilk. I've made the exact recipe before without using oatmilk, and didn't taste alcohol. With the oatmilk I definitely did, especially when the beer was young. It mellowed a bit after 2 months or so in the bottle.
