"This new beverage can be taken by ... the delicate nursing mother ... with great benefit."

Makes perfect sense...milk stout for nursing mothers! :astonished:

I take it that you haven't heard the bit about dark beers increasing milk production?

Any particular beers that you recommend? My wife is due in less than a month.

Huh, never occurred to me that there was much milk/lactose in a milk stout. Most or all of the ones I've had just didn't seem that milky...

Lactose isn't "milky" per se. It's just a sugar that most commonly used brewers yeast can't ferment, so you get additional sweetness.

Everybody always seems to recommend Guinness, but any dark beer will do. The catch-22 is that even though these beers stimulate milk production it's best not to feed the kid with that milk as it will contain traces of alcohol. Gotta wait until the "batch" after that to give it to the kiddo.

A lot of myths and b.s. were created by brewers in the 19th century about the health benefits of beer in general. And while there may be some truth to some of those claims, I can hardly believe that consuming alcohol while nursing is advisable or sensible.

Trace alcohol won't hurt an infant. Fruit or fruit products can contain trace alcohol and those are universally recommended for older babies.

The guidelines and social norms for parents just keep getting more ridiculous all the time.

Some of the folks here suggesting the consumption of alcohol to nursing mothers is...confounding to me. There are plenty of other foods/beverages out there that are as, if not more effective for nursing than a stout.

Got into milk stouts thanks to my neice, via the long gone Bandersnatch Pub in Tempe, AZ. At one time a local bar was tapping McKesson's, not sure if they still are. What I can't get from TW I get from local brewpubs. Cheers!

I was always of the school that the psychological advantages of the rare beer far out-weighed the physiological harm of a single drink. Both of my kids are doing quite well.
