I'm going to be in HHI from Friday of this week to Saturday of next. I'm not well versed in Brewers that don't distribute in the Chicago area. What should I be looking for if I'm into stouts/porters? I'll probably swing by Whole Foods and Kroger.

    Thanks!

It's hard to tell you not sure what's left on the shelves right now. The summer crowd wipes it clean. I'd i had to guess look for some can of quest Kaldi coffee stout or evil twin imperial biscotti break cans.

We get ET here in Chicago but I'll check for the other. I saw mention of Westbrook. Do they have any year round stouts worth trying?

Just got back from Hilton Head. Took some of the advice in this thread. Hit The Lodge; decent pub grub, nice draft list that currently includes Mexican Cake. Also snuck over to Hilton Head Brewing (brewery location on Cardinal Rd) for a couple. Nice knowledgeable staff and definitely worth the stop if your into ipas. Got growers of both Reggie IPA and Shoals. Good times. Thanks guys.

Tried my luck at Kroger. They've been out of Mexican Cake since the day it came in, according to Barry. Haven't made it to the Lodge yet... Still trying!

Just called The Lodge. They still have Mexican Cake on tap but won't put it in a growler. I may pop in to try the 5 oz pour though.

Check out Hilton Head Brewery's Break Series IPAs. They have a new guy that apprenticed at Trillium so these new IPAs are juice bombs. I have only tried Jointer, I can't wait to try the others when I get back to the area.

I had the Hilton Head Break Series Citra recently. Have a buddy that goes to HHI frequently so hope to try Jointer, J St, and Dunes soon. The Citra was good, but I also had Heist CitraQuench'l around the same time and thought it was a better beer.

@ScottDawg7 I haven't had either the Citra or CitraQuench'l so I can't speak to which is better. What I do know is Heist is getting a lot of hype right now while Hilton Head is flying completely under the radar.

About to hit the island. Any new info for me? Anyone been there recently?

Since nobody else has jumped in here, I'll share my limited experience. I was there for a few days two weeks ago - my first time on HHI. I did some reading of threads on here, including this one.

    FWIW -
The Kroger in Shelter Cove had a wonderful beer selection. Plenty of Westbrook cans, including Key Lime Gose.

The Lodge had pretty decent food and a good tap list. Including Mexican Cake on draft when I was there.

Hilton Head Brewing. Despite the pessimistic outlook on the thread linked above, I ended up stopping in. I went in with low expectations, but I actually thought the couple beers we had were pretty decent. I don't have anything to compare it to, or if it's actually declined since the reported departure of their brewer. I wouldn't hesitate to stop back there again though.

Hilton Head Brewery is absolute garbage compared to what it used to be. The days of awesome ipas there are long gone don't seem like they will ever return.

Is there anything close to Fripp Island? Not necessary there, but on the way in or close to that. A FIB told me to hit Bill's Liquor Store for shelf cans etc. which is pretty much what I'm interested in...

Bill's is by far your best bet. It's just over the bridge after leaving downtown Beaufort headed towards Hunting/Fripp. You may be surprised by some things you'll find there.

Right on, thanks for the confirmation. I plan on bringing larger format stuff, just wanted to grab some quantity local stuff to enjoy with the family. Cheers!

This sucks to hear. I really enjoyed the place when I visited there (the brewery that is, was told to avoid the brewpub)

It was also so disappointing to me to. Especially since I spend a lot of the summer in Hilton Head. What made it worse for me were the owners saying there's nothing wrong with the beer. I mean damn the NE style ipas are nothing like what they used to be anyone can tell that.

The tales of Hilton Head Brewery's demise are unfounded! I stopped by on Saturday on my way in for the week and picked up some excellent west coast and east coast IPA's. The Breaker Series is still great and they had shaky jake aged in bourbon which was amazing! This is a place not to miss!!
