So, I am moving from a lovely little (boring) house in the suburbs to a shared townhouse in the city. For those who know dc, it's in Shaw. For those who don't, it's an area just sketchy enough to worry about stuff being stolen off the front porch if it sits too long.

I can't get stuff sent to work, my room mates work longer hours than me, and I don't know any BA in the area who could get it sent to them to hold for me.

The question is: how can I get trade boxes sent to me safely?

I think you can have them hold it at UPS/Fed Ex or whatever. You might want to look into that option. You could always send it to my place but I'm in Falls Church.

Having made the trip from FC into the District many times whilst I lived there and attended Georgetown, I can aver that it ain't too far a trek. Plus, you guys could alternate meeting places and share some brews. It's all about networking, baby!

What MordorMongo and Eriktheipaman said, you can set up shipments to be held at your local UPS/FedEx location. They'll hold them for you. Kinda like a PO box @ the post office without the charge.

Send them to me. I'll help myself to a few of my favorites as payment, then I'll gladly send it back if I get around to it.

hell P.O boxes are like 15 bucks a month for the larger ones, or have them held at the carrier.

    this.

just familiarize yourself with where this is and what kind of hassle it is to go there. i did this in philly one time and i won't do it again unless i have to since it's a pain in the ass to go down there and the hub is a total clusterfuck of people with all sorts of shipping problems. yours however, might be better (or you might have an option that's not the distribution center for the entire city).

Can your roommates get it sent to their work? Otherwise, the other suggestions are better.

Thanks a ton for all the advice everyone. I'll try getting it held at the center for my next trade. Hopefully the new roomies will have a more accommodating situation, too (haven't gotten to know them well yet)

This is what I do right now, it's always a good excuse to have a beer and talk beer.

I live in a pretty decent area in Detroit, but they will never leave anything at the door. I just redirect boxes to my local FedEx or ups office and pick them up. Just make sure to tell the shipper you are doing so, it often shows as a delivery exception and I've almost caused a couple of mini heart attacks.

Farmington Hills sucks. There are quite a few nice neighborhoods here in Detroit. You'd be surprised.

Have them sent to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, I heard they have good security there...

You can always get box at a UPS store or one of those mail (you ship) stores, it is pretty cheap and they will hold boxes at no additional cost.

Anyone have luck with special instructions like "deliver to back door"? *Insert obligatory back door joke here* The carrier may or may not always see that or actually leave it there even if they do.

Yes. I had a package stolen off of my porch recently and since then, I've left a note for UPS/FedEx asking them to put the package in a concealed location. They've done this every time.

FedEx: call their 800 number and have your tracking number ready. Ask to "place delivery hold" then just follow the steps and select the location you want it held at. They will hold at any fed ex office location.

UPS: you have to sign up for a free account if you don't already have one. When a box is headed your way, you will receive an email letting you know. You can log in and set up the box to be held at UPS. They have other paid account options too but the free account will let you set up holds. You can also do this from their mobile app once your account is set up.
