You folks have some discriminating taste. I'll admit I haven't read the entire thread yet, but for most of these breweries I can find at least a couple beers I enjoy.

Is this a generational thing? Kids these days not knowing how good they have it? Or people only gravitating to one or two styles and if the beer in that style isn't top notch, the whole brewery sucks?

Honestly, I haven't found anything to "hate". That said, 90% of everything available is stuff I won't buy. That doesn't mean I won't drink it if someone has it in a bucket of ice at a party, or if it's the only thing on tap, but I've become pretty selective about what I actually keep on hand. So there are dozens of breweries who sell stuff I once purchased that I won't purchase anymore. No need to name names.

Sierra nevada for a whole brewery overall. I was going to say Green Flash and Stone but they actually have a couple beers i like.
Bells is not bad overall but everyone seems to think hopslam is outstanding but its not good. I gave them away.

Im not a kid but yes i think u are right. I only really drink a few styles. I like to go to brewerys and do tasters of different styles. If their IPA, APA, Stout, wheat beers are mediocre i will probly say they suck.
Also, I think what is going on with alot of my older drinking friends is they dont realize how many top notch breweries are so easily availble now. Alot of breweries that were considered good 5-10+ yrs ago suck compared to what is easily availible today. You dont have to settle for mediocre. Yes we are spoiled for sure. Theres no reason for anybody in San Diego to drink Sierra Nevada or Sam Adams. They just taste like beer not craft beer.

I'm putting Boulevard on the list. I just cannot find anything good from them anymore

I don't hate these breweries, but god dammit I hate it when places start distributing all over. Ballast Point and Green Flash. I was so happy when they started distributing MO but now I just ignore their IPAs and Pale Ales because I know they've been sitting for a year. Same goes for Lagunitas 90% of the time. All good breweries with good beers, I just don't want to drink malty Sucks.

I'm drinking a Trillium Fort Point now, have Tired Hands in the fridge and lots of BBA stouts in the cellar. But I still enjoy SNPA, had fun with the recent Beer Camp and probably look forward to Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest collabs more than any other annual beer out there. Boston Lager may not be my first choice very often, but it's a fine beer, too.

Folks should drink what they like, but I strongly recommend style hopping and trying to appreciate things for what they are. They've got their place, but it doesn't all have to be juicey IPAs and silky chocolate stouts.

Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale, Stout and Barleywine are arguably the best in their respective classes. That's 3 fine reasons for anyone anywhere to keep them in their rotation.

Yea my dad would say the same thing about Budweiser but he is very very wrong. its not the best of anything. I feel the same about Sierra Nevada. I get it tho. I like breweries that other people think suck. I get why people are putting Magic Hat and Abita on this list but i still like those breweries. Im not going to act like they are top notch just becuz i like them. And im probly not going to buy them when i can get outstanding beers just as easily for about the same price.

I feel like a convincing argument can be made that Budweiser is best in class for AALs ... I wouldn't pick it, but I can see a valid argument.

One local example for me is Dark City. I've honestly never liked any of their beers and I've given up trying new ones.

I know; I'm the only one who thinks of those beers on those terms, too :rolling_eyes:

Honestly, I just think you made it clear that don't know how to evaluate beer.

Apples to apples is the way it's done. Only way possible, really.

I love spending an afternoon at Sierra Nevada. I haven't been to Founders in many trips to Grand Rapids. I will drink a
Some Founders beer now and then. Does everybody know that the house yeast for both is the Chico strain?

I completely agree. I always try to rate a beer fairly based on the style and not solely on my personal taste ... thats one of the reasons I had never rated a rauchbier on here. I just couldn't find one I liked - I had the ones that are hallmarks of the style, but I just don't care for it, so I struggled to rate it.

Which reminds me, I picked up that boson de higgs that you had recommended (I think over in the WBAYDN thread) I'm planning to drink that on Saturday for the Berliner Tasting.

Atwater. Worst iipa I've ever tried, worst BBA porter/stout/bock(s) I've ever tried. Super disappointing on every occasion. Every so often something they put out sounds like maybe it'll be the one that really delivers. Still waiting.

Also, Shorts you can basically ignore until you see something up your alley, then you've got pretty good odds of enjoying it.

I don't agree with that at all, but they certainly make many decent beers. SNPA isn't in the same ballpark as beers like MO, Fort Point, Edward or Launch in my opinion. I actually think Lagunitas 12th of Never is much better than SNPA. It's certainly ok though. I actually think Bigfoot is very overhopped for the style and I don't like it at all, but some people love it. Narwhal is excellent however. I think Tumblr is good too. All their beers are well made.

The same goes with Sam Adams. It's one thing to say that a brewery isn't making anything that you are choosing to buy. It's another to say that they make bad beers or that they "suck". Some of the comments here are ridiculous.

Even if I really dislike most beers from a brewery that I've tried, it won't stop me from continuing to try other beers from them in hopes that I'll find one I like. Discovery is one of the most fun parts of my beer drinking hobby.

Now, terrible service at breweries and bad personal experiences will cause a boycott every time. I don't want to financially support confirmed assholes. This is why I've sworn off Rogue, for instance, though I'm not missing out on anything tasty from them anyway.

On the SNPA front, I'd say that it's more fundamentally what a Pale Ale is supposed to be about than those others. I've had a number of them, and will again, but only if I'm in the mood for one glass. They are made for immediate impact, and deliver on that front, but usually become monotonous by the end of the first. A Pale Ale, however, is a beer for enjoying all night long, or at least a good part of it, and SNPA has the complexity to work exceedingly well in that context.

    Rogue for a national basis
Regional for me is Pigeon Hill (Muskegon, MI). Everything I try from them is nearly a drain pour.
