Out of curiosity, why was this done?

Struise Tsjeeses Reserva is a barrel aged version of the holiday ale Tsjeeses. Every year it rotates from being bourbon barrel aged one year and port the next. Rinse and repeat. In 2009 it was bourbon, 2010 it was port, 2011 it was bourbon, etc. (I believe this year was the first year that they did both iterations.)

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/15237/46850 (combined listing of 2008-2011?)
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/15237/84824 (bourbon listed with zero reviews)
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/15237/85638 (port listed with zero reviews)

Isn't it a little redundant to have them all listed out?

And whats up with the whole zero review thing? I thought that was done away with. Struise seems to be one of the breweries that has the most listings of beer with 0 reviews.

Question - where are you citing the alternating schedule of bourbon & port pre-2012 from? The only information I can find is that previous vintages were aged on nebulous 'oak'. Other than AgentMunky, who had the 2012 vintage, none of the reviews actually cite 'bourbon' as a flavor in the beer.

In response to your question. There are two discrete products available, and it is clear which one is port and which one is bourbon. It is somewhat silly to have only one listing for both when you can easily tell the two beers apart. I created the listings with 0 reviews preemptively, as invariably someone is going to attempt to create a 'Port' listing to represent the new Red/Yellow label when he/she can't find it on here. While somewhat of a kludge, this was the best solution I could come up with. Pre-2012 vintages don't have very clear dating, so it'd be pretty hard to separate them into bourbon/port if what you say is accurate. You'll see Ratebeer has done things the same way.

Site Editors can create listings without reviews - I do this when I see new products announced or confirmed festival lists as it really cuts down on duplicate listings and maintains consistent naming conventions. Unfortunately, the dearth of European BAs leads to some of the Struise ones staying empty for a little bit until they make it stateside or show up on Etre Gourmet.

I really appreciate your reply and now understand the rational.

I dont have any direct "proof" that I can link you to. My information comes directly from Urbain and a conversation we had back in April. Admittedly, it was my first time trying the reserva edition and we had a discussion regarding barrel aging. He told me all about the "jesus" brew and how each year it rotates from port to bourbon. I cited all of it in my review but it appears as though they made a change in the process shortly after our discussion since 2012 offers both treatments.

That's what I figured. If I'm feeling particularly motivated I'll send him an email and see if he can confirm which Lot #s/Best Before dates match which vintages/barrels. Then I'll see how successfully I can sort through the previous reviews to potentially match them to the Port & Bourbon listings. Unfortunately, there are probably too many unspecified reviews. :stuck_out_tongue: It's not like Perseguidor, where I could use flavor profile to figure it out.
