We do not pasteurize all of the beers. Also there is no change in taste. Internally we debated this but we tested heavily and there was no difference.

Originally it was just 20%, never looked at more than that.

Interesting, laboratory tests generally seem to indicate sterility in Shorts beers, including sours like Tunnel Bear where one would often expect to see some living organisms. I'd be curious to find out what beers are NOT flash pasteurized.

No worries, good luck and thank you for the response. Prolonged Enjoyment is my current overall favorite beer and this sale will not change that

Now to throw my hat into the ring with this news. Lagunitas might be the only brewery owned by a macro beer company that I drink. Now do I ever drink there regular beers.... NO. Do I drink there awesome one hitter IPA's, hell yes! Correct me if i'm wrong but Laguitas started and expanded that series after the sell out to Heineken.

So now they got a chunk of Short's. My thoughts are once this path starts it will normally end with a total buyout eventually. Look at the Lagunitas. But the only real question is how will the beer be affected. Short's is the same as Lagunitas for me, as I never buy any of there core beers anymore, but I look forward to "most" of there IPA weekly /monthly releases. My hope is maybe they can take a page from Lagunitas and keep more of these non core releases coming, and perhaps at a cheaper price point....

I don't believe they pasteurize IPA's and other hoppy beers.

    From Sean:
Obviously, beers with "odd ingredients" likely includes a lot of Short's limit releases. I would also assume that anything that has spent time in a barrel runs through flash pasteurization.

Maybe you missed the 2015 Bourbon County debacle?

And @ScottatShorts , certainly not trying to put anyone on the defensive, just sincerely curious as Shorts has grown to become one of my favorite MI breweries mostly due to your one-off and experimental beers. I am generally not a huge fan of your hoppy offerings, something I have always attributed to flash pasteurization.

Interesting, because they are almost always essentially sterile

Not a Stout man, so I must of.

I have always noticed this also. I also noticed I have never had quite the hop flavor I'm looking for out of there IPA's. Things like Citra's bright notes never shine though when they use it. I've always thought this was FP destroying the some of the volatile oils.

Yes, We have had numerous tastings and have never seen a difference and no loss of hop profile. We tested Huma numerous times and we could never see a difference

"Under the terms of the agreement, Lagunitas will not have a say in day-to-day operations or dictate which suppliers and distributors the brewery uses, Newman-Bale said. Lagunitas will have one voting member on Short’s five-person board, but that member will not have veto power."

I probably should not like this but I really do. I am done ever saying for certain what will happen in the future but I can say that is certainly not either parties intent.

Just to chime in on the Slurm Lord burn thing... I tried very gently pouring and the burn seems to be lessened, not gone but better. Still not a great beer but at least it's drinkable now. Maybe once they start using green bottles things will improve.

Honestly if I took every Michigan produced NEIPA attempt that I've tried in the last 12 months, Slurm Lord enters the top tier.

Maybe my standards are much lower than yours, but I would consider this beer in a category above "just drinkable"

I bet I could go to my local store right now and pick out at least 50 beers that are "drinkable".........
