I have a similar experience in my shop in Manchester UK. I am actually stocking some beers that I would not select using the normal price/quality matrix to determine value because their local provenance makes them appeal to some drinkers.

No problem, glad I could add it to the discussion. Hopefully it generates some more!

I don't hate the Brewers Association. I am critical for sure; but I tend to be that way about organizations (many religions included) that make a core part of their identity exclusion.

Apparently, you have forgotten the Ethic of Internet Discussions and Social Media Rule Number 42: All critics are "haters"!

I would have had to know it existed in order to forget it . Again, I'll go with more of the standard definition of hate and critical versus another self proclaimed one ("craft beer", "Ethic of Internet Discussion and Social Media Rule Number 42" et al).

OP, asked about VT quality local beer at a reasonable price. Everybody in the USA wants Heady Topper. So one of the best beers in America at a reasonable price. What's reasonable? Depends on state, city, region. Drink fresh, drink local. Again, I drink on flavor, not price. Here in MA, $12.50 a 4 pack/16 oz is very reasonable. 6 pack 12 oz bottles are not that common, from the local brewers at least. Enjoy your iron city. And lighten up, Francis. ( Know the quote?)

I came across this: The official name for ABI is "AB InBev". If the alphabet number for each letter is added together, the total is 55. The number 55 is the 10th Fibonacci number and a triangular number (the sum of the consecutive numbers 1 to 10). It is also the largest Fibonacci number to also be a triangular number. Its conspiracy, pure and simple.

This is in line with what local shop owners are saying around here. Missouri brews are selling (and Dogfish Head, because it's new to us), but everything else is sitting and getting dusty.

Personally, when I visit outside markets, I strive to find a bottle shop with a large local selection, not necessarily the most robust selection overall. I don't want to haul back or drink beers I can get at home if I'm deep into another distribution area.

I was just saying Beer Advocate didn't, I didn't say the Brewers Association did - but if that's what struck a cord....lets just say: Everything has a crack. That's how the light gets in.

...and I do respect what all brewers do - its hard work, takes a lot of attention and care...and I enjoy beer sooooo much

So do you feel that way about the American Chemical Socieity or the American Medical Association?

Same (for illustration only and not intended to be exhaustive): AMA has prohibited member participation in certain classes of clinics and chiropractors (in general) that make care more affordable and accessible that meet standards (exclusionary so I'm critical of that)

I'm critical of those stances, but I don't hate them (either)

Ok, thanks. That clarifies some things. You are using a quite broad definition of "exclusionary."

My first thought was that what you meant was, "excludes certain people/businesses from membership in the organization. (Which actually is not the case for the Brewer's Association to any extent beyond groups like the ACS, etc.)

Everyone can be a member, just don't get the same benefit...but at least the big brewers get to pay a lot more in

Yep and not at all uncommon for professional associations organized by and set up to represent their membership.

My line of work has virtually required that I have, or have had, membership in more than one organization and most all of them have more than one category of membership (with differential rates and benefits for the different categories of membership).

And they may have practices you are critical of...but you are still a member. At this point, it's worth mentioning I am a member of the Brewers Association (since I'm an AHA member).
