Okay -- that's very weird, because I just saw a 12 pack of the Wies'n with the same date. I chalked it up to a 12 pack sitting on a shelf since last season -- the retailer had the beer long into last year, so that didn't surprise me.

To the Weihenstephaner you saw -- can you also put that on the retailer? I picked up a six-pack (sorry Lurchus) yesterday that looks to have been bottled on May 2, 2017. Oh yeah, and it's drinking quite well.

The retailer was definitely at fault for the old stock of Wiesn. I go there enough to know that the same cases just sat and sat there. In their defense, it did have a best before date of June 2017, but it's now August. I'll be interested to see if they replace it with this year's release or if they just won't bother getting it again.

It's a little more tricky to pinpoint who's responsible for the Weihenstephaner. They sell single 0.5 L bottles of it, as opposed to the Paulaner Wiesn which are just stacks of cases on the floor. The retailer could just be restocking their shelves with what they have in the back or they could continuously be receiving old bottles from the distributor. Either way, the imports at this store get neglected way more than the American beers do. But I feel that's the case in a lot of stores, not just this one.

FWIW I also see lots of old German beer in multiple retailers in PA; it just seems that old German beers is the norm now.

    Non-cheers to this stuff.

We received this in Boston along with Paulaner Marzen so far. I saw two unopened cases in the fridge, but I wanted to make a mix-a-six of both so I didn't bother asking if I could open them. I'll grab some tomorrow though.

When I saw the brown bottles for the Hofbrau for a second I think I thought it might have been the amber version...if they even brew one.

They haven't in recent years, but one can hope! (probably taste just like the HB Maibock, anyway.)

    Then I'd definitely buy it!

They can call it their "session" Maibock so it sells better here in the US.

Personally I like 0.33 L bottles, because like @steveh (if I'm understanding him correctly) I also enjoy different beers and styles. Especially considering the strength of some of these beers hovering around 6%, not exactly session strength.

Regarding the format overall (6 packs of 0.33 L bottles), I'm curious if they'd ever move to 4 packs of 0.5 L cans. Those are by far the most popular format for beer here in the US (albeit 16 oz. cans not 16.9, but whatever).

Oh, I forgot to add that I don't find it too bad in a half liter Weizen glass either due to the larger than normal head for this style of beer.

Now 0.33 L bottles of Helles, Oktoberfest...etc. poured into a half liter mug are a different story.

Yup, we've got those too. Now that I think about it, Reissdorf, Pilsner Urquell, Bitburger, Veltins Pils, Bennediktiner's beers, and Kostritzer Schwarzbier among others all come in half liter 4 packs.

Rumors confirmed! I picked up a six-pack of Hofbräu Oktoberfest yesterday and it's in BROWN bottles -- yay! Sampled one at the grill and it was quite good, though I think the Weihenstephaner Fest is still my favorite of the Wies'n styles.

And based upon my readings those Jever cans make their way to Canada. To the best of my knowledge only Jever in green bottles in the US.

    Cheers!

P.S. We do get Pilsner Urquell in brown bottles and cans so I suppose that is a highlight.

I'm surprised that isn't the normal in Europe. All of the green-bottled German beers we see over here all seem to be brown-bottled over there -- wonder why Urquell isn't.

I love this place, Christmas in September.

Along with what I think is a tapping of a wooden keg of Paulaner W'iesn, there's a killer German menu all day on September 30th (same menu every Wednesday in Sept/Oct).

And there's a special German roast each Sunday with pork, beef, roasted chickens, and shanks

Here's the draft list for these two months, or at least they have most of these on during the two months, the dates are just for the promotional events for each beer.

    9/6 Weihenstephan Festbier

    9/13 Paulaner Marzen & Wiesn

9/20 Benediktiner Oktoberfest & Wurzburger Oktoberfest

    9/27 Ayinger Oktober Fest-Marzen

    10/4 Traunstein Festbier

    10/11 Hacker-Pschorr Original Oktoberfest

    10/18 Spaten Oktoberfest

    10/25 Hofbrau Oktoberfestbier

    10/29 Andechser Spezial Hell

I park my ass there at least every Saturday afternoon if I'm free to try at least two of the above until I tear through the entire list. Of course some of the above can be found at other bars in the area (Paulaner W'iesn is already on tap at one bar that I frequent), so I'll have them more than once...plus I'll have them in bottles at home.

    Prost!
