G' afternoon NBS-ers! Thanks to @lordofthewiens for the kick-off today. Got two pups of our own here, pics to follow...first it's about the beer!

This own showed up in a box from my best bud from PA @jzeilinger
    [IMG]
Three Floyds Necron 99 Scottish Style Ale

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Snorkel glass.

Appearance: Dark orange body with a slightly khaki brown head.

Aroma: Definitely not what I would expect from a Scottish style. Plenty of hops.

Taste/Moutfeel: Not bad. Hoppy but not a lot of peatiness I would expect from this style. More caramel malt flavor from this one. It is FFF's so I am not surprised by the spin on the style. Medium mouthfeel with a nice lingering bitterness with a nice malt finish.

Overall: Not a bad beer, just not one I would want to drink more of, I think it has a lot to do with the lack of balance with the flavors.

Both pooches are crashed out and sleeping....

16 oz can, dated 8/16/17, poured into a teku

A - A hazy golden straw color with a three finger white head.

S- Citrus, melons, hints of tropical fruits, floral, touch of wet grass.

T- Floral/herbal, citrus, melons, faint hint of some tropical fruits, finish is very tea like.

    M- Smooth, light body, crisp.

O- Feel like Tired Hands is liking the idea of "crushable" IPAs for the summer and this is a tasty, very easy to drink IPA. Like Handbier I could see myself drinking 2-3 cans easliy in a session if I had enough.

Having a limeage kettle sour at the brewery. A decent sour but didn't really overwhelm with the lime. Still it was fun to visit a great brewery[IMG]

    Hey what's going on?!

    Beer! That's what!

So I am a man of few words....

    any questions?...

With that our hero is off and running, let's see what we got going today!

This looks good, and seems to be making the rounds of late so I see, so this is a great first start.

    -----------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a pokal style glass. Packaged July 6th 2017.

Orange to amber body color, as nice light marzen with a good sensing chestnut brown. Fairly clear with some nice rising carbonation in even streams, quite fine bubbless too. Off white head faintly makes a presence at two fingers, dissolves to a simple good puck, and a pretty nice creamy collar.

Bit of a neutral if somewhat closed nose for a marzen. Light sensing toasty malts, with a touch of caramel sweetness. Not much herbal quality but a little bit gets out in the hop angle just slightly. Clean but seems to hint a bit of possible thickness to the body on the aroma.

Palate has a good snap to it. Sharp almost steely first sip in flavor, but with mild hop lingering herbality. Mid palate manages a touch of light caramel, but with more playful mouthfeel, almost like a bit of champagne like bubbly crispness on the tongue. Sweetness is toned down in favor of a bit of mineral and earthy quality that takes over particularly on the finish. Spicy, with a touch of faint sweet.

Decent marzen, a bit jarring slightly but drinkable easily none the less.

Ely Pilsner from Grist Iron Brewing in Hector NY. I had a lot of new and different beers this week while in the Finger lakes in Western NY. There are a lot of breweries and brew pubs in the area. None of the ones I visited were bad but they none were outstanding either. Grist Iron was one of the better ones and Ely Pilsner one of the better beers. It's pretty much a paint by numbers pils. Nothing wrong with it but nothing great about it.

Some friends got married last year in the Fingers Lake region (a destination wedding). They traveled up there quite a bit in preparation and visited a lot of the small breweries of that region. Their opinions pretty much mirrored yours: solid beers but nothing special.

    Cheers!

That one was billed as being inspired by the hops used in Master of Karate and [Double] Orange Starfish. Great marketing, as I figured there's no reason the new beer would be as good as either the inspirations. It (with Astro Zombie) seemed to get the lines going quite long two weeks ago.

Good to see it was a solid offering, since I decided to skip the line. Given Tweets and my estimates of line length, I would've missed it, anyhow. If they reproduce it, I can hope for shorter lines.

I made the same mistake. It states Scortch style ale. Their website calls it an IPA, I believe their first non bright IPA

This is a grand time of year. The EPL soap opera is underway, I can watch the Spanish two week bike race, La Vuelta, and our downtown is not yet overrun with students and football fans. I have one last crowler from my New York trip, Single Cut DDH Softly Spoken Spells.

Great hoppy flavor without being overpowering or overly bitter. Sweet finish but not offensively so. I'm happily polishing off this crowler and looking forward to my next trip up north.

Pours dark brown. Foamy, short, brown head that fades immediately.

Smells coffee, roast malt, chocolate, light pepper and alcohol.

Taste coffee, Rose malt, chocolate and light cinnamon. Followed by light pepper, Heat and Light alcohol. Semi-dry finish with a roast linger. Medium body and fizzy medium carbonation.

The penultimate from the recent west of the Mississippi haul. Got a bit bogged down with the fanciful made up back story while just wanting a couple of facts off the label. From the DIPA list on Ba I found it at the bottom of the TG stable and that all of their DIPAs are listed as 8 abv.

a - Yellow orange with a dense head that dissipated leaving a thin film that pushed to the edge of the glass to provide some lacing. (4)
s - Hops on the herbal side and a bit of candied orange. (4)
t - Good but not too interesting. No interplay or variation until a minty alcohol sensation remains. (3.75)
f - Smooth, medium body but hangs on long enough. (4)
o - Good but not a standout. Somewhere in the middle of an awfully wide road. (4)

Thanks to @lordofthewiens for another great start to NBS. I recently received some outstanding Western beers from @Wasatch, including this Schwarzbier from Eddyline. Given that the "great eclipse" is exactly 24 hours from now, I thought that a black lager in the middle of the day would be a great choice:

Beautiful-looking beer! A nearly opaque deep dark brown color with a thick and long-lasting tan head. The aroma was somewhat muted as expected, but I sensed dry, roasted malt, some coffee, and a hint of plum. Very clean tasting, which makes sense given that it's a lager. There was a bold roast which was sufficiently bitter to be balanced but not overshadowing of the nice chocolatey notes and the faint cherry/plum on the end. Medium-bodied and very easy-drinking. Huge flavor. I could drink this regularly, even without the eclipse madness. Thanks again to @Wasatch for this one!

Cheers, enjoy the eclipse (totality in Nashville!), and take care of your eyes!

A visit to South Lyon netted a few fun beers to bring back to Virginia, like This Guy from Witch's Hat

Hazy gold with an off white foam head that leaves behind a full curtain of tiny bubble lacing. Nose is full of sweet yet bitter orange and really little else. Bitter immediately with a pretty quick sweet orange follow up (ya, pretty much the nose) in this surprisingly thin for the weight beer. Aftertaste mainly sweet as it leaves in highly dry fashion.

Finally, after watching people drink it on BA for a couple of weeks. My fault really, for one reason or another I haven't made it to any off the "good" beer stores. My wife finally scored this today.
Pours a deep gold with a generous head. New bubbles rise from the bottom with every sip cycle all the way to the end.
Nice rich sweet burnt caramel aroma.
Malt in the front, hops in the back. This is a refreshing balancing act.
Didn't expect a dud from SN and I didn't get one. Love this beer.
