See if you can get Marble IPA, it's under 7% (6.8?) and pretty freakin' dank for its weight. Enjoy.

I have tasted the petroleum-like aroma/flavor throughout drinking those beers. Just like you reported it was subtle (or "vague" as you termed it). I had not problems finishing the beers but the petroleum-like flavor was sufficiently present to keep me from ordering a second pint.

    Cheers!

I think most people that have answered in this thread don't know what dank means.

Understandable. The beers I had which exhibited the aforementioned aromas were store- or brewery-bought 16 oz. cans consumed at home. Perhaps "dissipated" was the wrong word as it implies the aroma went away entirely. Faded would have been more accurate. Regardless, I wouldn't have had seconds of any of those brews either, delicious as they were, as I almost never drink more than one of any given beer in a sitting (especially if 8+% ABV).

I think "dank" is like "rad", having morphed from somewhat real descriptive character to mean "really cool hoppy stuff". I've always had trouble warming up to the burgeoning popularity of the term. I really love IPAS, but the very back part of my Grandparent's basement in Richmond, next to the coal and the dirt, with no circulation, is what I have always thought of as dank. Or earthy!

Did you read my previous post (#26) of this thread?

"FWIW when I use the word "dank" I mean a marijuana type aroma/flavor."

Perhaps @jojo2112 will respond to your query as well.

    Cheers!

I did read that. I've never experienced a marijuana aroma in a beer. As @rgorden wrote in post 46 dank reminds me of a wet cellar or a damp cave.

I have on multiple occasions. There are some crops of Columbus hops which have a lot of dank and if you late hop/dry hop with these batches of Columbus hops there is a notable aroma/flavor of marijuana. There are likely other hop varieties that can make this same aroma/flavor contribution but for my palate it is these certain Columbus crops. I am personally not a fan of this quality in beers or in general.

    Cheers!

Yes! Columbus is probably what I would consider the singularly most dank hop there is.

Only one or two of the beers mentioned in this thread (that I've had) would I consider dank. I recently had a 6% from Dancing Gnome called Pounce that had a nice dank finish. I do think dank has the marijuana smell, but not sure that's how I would classify the taste. Then again I'm not a weed smoker so maybe I'm off on that. Perhaps piney, but a bit more bite.

    Curious, Why?

    Is a 6.9abv beer different than a 7abv beer?

Another hop variety where I experienced dank was Mosaic. I don’t typically pick up dank from Mosaic (e.g., I homebrewed with Mosaic several times with no dank) but for the Founders Mosaic Promise of spring 2016 I picked it up big time. I discussed this in a New Beer Sunday thread (link provided below). An extract of my post:

    “Aroma:

Founders: Whoa! A BIG hop aroma of dank!! I was not expecting that at all. There is also a bit of fruity from the hops but very much in the background compared to the dank. As the beer opens up I pick up some malt aroma as well.”

I've had and enjoyed many beers with Mosaic hops including Mosaic Promise. Never picked up a Marijuana aroma in any of them.

Me too with the one exception of the spring of 2016 version of Founders Mosaic Promise. Each batch of hops (crop year & hop farm/location) will yield varying hop flavor profiles.

    Cheers!

Today Magnify is releasing a 6.0% ABV Dank West Coast IPA called LiL Zig Zag,

That sounds like it's exactly what your looking for!
