Whatever. The only brewery I am absolutely boycotting now is listed as craft by BA. But I want to see a larger role in our economy for small companies, so I buy independent craft whenever possible - I do but big beer for purposes of ticking.

Sorry if I missed this, but which craft brewery are you boycotting?

My reasons are off topic. You could Google on Yuengling boycott to get some idea, though.

Well aware of their "issues". Not a fan of them either. Especially Mr. Yuengling. Not boycotting them by any stretch, but I can't remember the last time I had one of their beers.

I have read employees of big beer on average are better paid, have better benefits, have better job security, and work in safer conditions. I am certain you have visited enough small breweries to know that the safety issue alone is a serious situation at many of them,

My point, take it or leave it, is that there are important things to be considered both pro and negative on both sides of this Mission To Destroy Big Beer. You and I have reached the point of this discussion where I have given up on the idea that you will change my mind about this. Cheers,.

I have read a number of articles that one of the changes that AB made to the Goose Island brewery in Chicago after the purchase was improvements in safety. IMO that is a good thing and worthy of appreciation.

    Cheers!

    1. Big beer employees are likely paid better because very large scale beer production is more capital intensive, and thus labor productivity is higher. Also because the BMC facilities (excluding the ex Coors plant in Golden Colorado) are unionized. Those are characteristics of the plants, not the ownership. High End buying say, Devils Backbone is no more likely to bring a union into DBB than it is to bring AAL production into DBB. I mean the unions could try to organize DBB - they could also try to organize, say, SN. I wouldn't hold my breath for either.
    2. I am not engaged in any attempt to destroy big beer. Such an attempt would be quixotic. I wouldn't mind seeing the market share of independent craft go up to 20 % though. I prefer seeing a smaller share of the economy in the hands of global megacorporations. I try to support smaller businesses in other areas as well, but I can think of few where that is as easy as beer.

That's good, for sure. Though personally I would prefer if OSHA would enforce safety standards, so it was not necessary to avoid small businesses in order to support better worker safety. Unfortunately many elected officials do not believe in such regulation. Why that is the case, and what can be done about it, is off topic.

This is beer advocate. I'm sure theres consumer electronic advocate and retail advocate as well.

I buy Nikes and my shirts are made in Vietnam. I do however love locally sourced fruits/veggies, beer, and breads. Unless one is a loud mouth and interfering with others opinions, I think the beauty of it all is that we can pick and choose where we can try to be ethical. This all or nothing mentality is cancerous imho.

In closing, we are at beer advocate. We probably care more than the average person about the tap room wars that are taking place. We don't want to see predatory actions sub out a great local IPA for say, space dust or GI IPA... These same predatory actions may be forcing our deli meat options to change and suffer, but why arent we making a big deal there? We pick our battles. Again, this is Beer ADVOCATE.

I just don't understand why people get themselves all worked up when it comes to corporate beer but are perfectly ok supporting businesses whose practices are 100x worse. Just seems hypocritical to me.

I wouldn't say worked up. But it's more about, what affects them most personally. You change how or what a man drinks and there may be hell to pay.

Now if home depot closes up 2-3 small shops when it came to a neighborhood, these same people may not care all too much.

Have your beer choices been hindered by ab InBev? I've personally seen them steal tap handles and pristine shelf space away from other viable local products. This to me affects me personally. It's why I spend time on BA. I like beer and talking about it. I've seen some bad companies do some bad things but I'll be honest and say, I care less. I have to pick my battles.

When someone shops at Home Depot instead of their local hardware store, they are saying "Fuck you, I don't give a shit about NY community, " to their neighbors. But that's just my opinion.

What an awful pic! Vampire in a suit and an old senile Dick! I stopped buying his beer a long time ago, because it's awful. Now there's another reason not to support him.

Devil's Advocate- what if Home Depot was employing a lot more of their neighbors, providing them benefits and a higher wage than the local hardware store ever could? What if Home Depot found ways to give back to the community, donating to local charitable causes? What if you had a set budget for a project and the lower cost of Home Depot products allowed you to go ahead with said project while the local hardware store prices would be too much to bear?

Your question(s) is much too rational to be taken seriously. Perhaps you can re-phrase it with more outrage and anger?

And make sure to express GREAT offense when anyone buys anything from a company that is not local.
