Does anyone have any experience with this strain? We pitched 2 bottles of this into 6 gallons of of a higher gravity IPA at 75 degrees. Then brought temp down to 68 degrees in the conical and after 48 hours we are not seeing any signs of Co2 in our blow off bucket. This is only our third batch of beer so we are not really sure what to expect but, we were expecting a pretty vigorous fermentation at this point. Is this something to be concerned about or just be patient? Cheers.
I would expect some activity by that point. Do you see any krausen? Possibly fermentation has started, and the CO2 is venting out somewhere other than where you're expecting it to, so you might want to check your various seals and lids.
We have a stainless conical and haven't opened it up to look, but did tighten up all the clamps. Giants looked good tonight !
What was the use by date on the vials? You have a conical and don't make starters? This is like having a BMW in a trailer park...
3rd batch, conicals? What just happened here? Anyway beachbrewer, check out the information in this link. Sounds like you can afford a stirplate and a few flasks so I suggest you pick them up.
I have had high gravity beers go 48 hours with no signs of fermentation and 12 hour later it will blow the lid off my bucket!
Gravity reading this morning is 1.024 - started at 1.071 (shooting for 1.016). Looks like we're good, but MLucky must be right, the C02 must be venting somewhere other than through the blowoff tube/bucket. Thanks for all the feedback - (and although its a little early to be drinking, the beer tasted great).
I've been using this yeast quite a bit recently and have had similar experiences. On one beer the bubbles will rumble, on the next, it will seem like nothing is happening. I can say this, when I used it on a 20 gallon batch of barley wine, I was concerned because it didn't create an insane krausen, but when I popped the lid and took a look 24 hours later, I could visibly see the turbulence and my fears had been assuaged. It's a good yeast, clean and discrete in it's duties.
I only used it for a single batch (that I just kegged), but it fermented pretty vigorously and quickly, reaching FG in 6 days and taking my amber from 1.060 to 1.006. Like you said, you must be venting CO2 somewhere else... break out the starsan or soapy water solution and check for leaks in the conical.
I have never had a chance to brew with mkyle, whom it appears from your posts, is a legend in the homebrew community. I did have a DFH 120 last week though
NiceFly, thanks for the link, it was very informative. we are going to try harvesting the yeast from this batch.
