Forbidden Root (2018)

Was able to make my way in to try Power Trip tonight. It is unreal. So good. It is now my favorite IPA out of Forbidden Root and also out of Chicago. Had to leave with a howler. For me, Forbidden Root is without a doubt hands down the best brewery in Chicago. Every beer they do is interesting and unique and also incredible and pushing new ground. They are just on another level.

Seems I'm in the minority, but I didn't love Power Trip. I prefer way more citrus/fruit notes in an excessively dry hopped New England IPA; this tasted more like fresh ganja & dry grass (no pun intended), with some banana & cream notes for balance.

Far from an abomination, mind you, but I think Toro was much more in line with what I'm looking for in the style.

 

The next question on that would be is Power Trip to green right now? And will it not "bloom" because it is in demand and being consumed so quick?

 

A great question, but I've got to trust that the Forbidden Root guys felt it was ready.

Palates very greatly as well; someone else on here described this as very juicy, contrary to my notes. I don't think either one of us is 'wrong', but our reactions were VERY different.

 

It was definitely ready. Of course that doesn't mean it won't change over time.

I will second @TigerDriver91. It was my favorite Forbidden Root offering and my favorite Chicago beer of this style. Ghost Tropic and Snoochie round out my top 3.

I would love to do Power Trip side by side with some Trillium. I believe if you put that beer in a Trillium can, no one would be the wiser.

 

i'm with you on that exact point. solid offering but prefer many others that they've done.

regardless, they are in rarified air right now and completely spoiling us by making too much above average to excellent beer.

 

Power Trip should be canned.

 

I'd think "trillium's beer is good, but they really need to catch up to FR's can art game."
