It's that time of year again folks. Fresh hops beers of all sorts are about to start popping up on tap lines and store shelve. So let's talk about where they can be found, and how they're tasting.

Hopefully Castle Danger goes back to form from last year. Same with Surly, the '15 batch was terrible.

Castle Danger could bring the price per ounce down to market level too. Bomber pricing in four pack form doesn't sit well with me.

Fair State has tapped their It's Gold, Jerry! fresh hop pale ale. Cascade and CTZ hops from Mighty Axe hops. 30 IBU.

Tasting notes: this isn't a beer about nothing. It has something, and more than waiting in line at a restaurant for 30 minutes something, or walking around a parking garage carrying an air conditioner something, but something. There are some nice green vegetal notes, grass exposed to the sun after a hard rain, green wood. Soft bitterness. Creamy texture. All quite nice. It leaves me wanting more, and at 4.7 ABV I can.

This is where the Spirit Foul came out my nose. :stuck_out_tongue:

Agreed. I was excited for the tall boy format until I seen the price. Pretty much $20 per 4 pack after taxes is redic.. I only purchased 1. I had more than a couple at the brewery though.

We stopped in Friday after work for a pint and it was utter shite. No fresh hop aroma, no nothing. Tasted like a lager... because it was. And the server refused to listen to us. Choked it down then switched to a Spirit Foul.

    Maybe their taps were flipped...

Well, that's odd. It is fairly mellow doesn't hit you over the head with aroma or hops, but it's definitely not a lager. Who was your beertender? Gray haired lady or face tat guy? They get a little harried when it's busy.

FWIW it's gold Jerry is a fresh hop GOLDEN ale not a pale ale. Still not a lager.

I think I upset some people over generalizing the word lager.

I probably should have been more presise, it tasted like a Pilsner. I don’t really drink many lagers so I have a tendency to group styles under an umbrella term. Maybe Pilsner is what I mean when I say lager?

And apologies to fair state, utter shite was pretty over exaggerated and not called for at all. And I actually enjoy their Pilsner quite much when I’m in the mood for it (unlike a lot of others out there)! But if it was really ‘It’s Gold Jerry’ and it carried that flavor profile, we just didn’t like it based on what we were in the mood for... plain and simple. Tasted nothing like a pale ale to our palates. This was the third year we’ve stopped in for a pint of it and have thoroughly enjoyed it in prior years.

Pilsners and lagers use a different kind of yeast than ales do, which is more likely what people are taking issue with. There would be a noticeable difference in taste. Sounds like you were served the wrong beer...

(*whisper voice*) there's also the possibility that he wouldn't be able to taste the difference....

It will be in the south metro. Apparently there aren't any liquor stores in the north metro.

Between an ale and a Pilsner? Or between a Pilsner and Fair States fresh hop

    Please elaborate...
