Anyone else have the "new" Hopstar? Picked up a 4 pack and was excited to have found it again given how much I liked it earlier this summer. Needless to say, it seems like a completely different beer. Doesn't look or taste at all what it was like in the initial batch. Very disappointing.

Shorewood Liquor has Pompeii, DDH Sue, Darkness, some Vanilla Worldwide Stout, Hammerheart Thors/Imperial Longship, and fresh Blissful Ignorance (as good as it ever was!).

I love how 2016 darkness is just another shelf turd this week . Edina liquor still has a bunch but I doubt anyone cares....

I'm sure a big part of Darkness sitting is a lot of the beer drinking public isn't looking for Darkness right now thinking it can only be purchased in late October.

Or maybe people aren't as willing to pay $20 for a bomber of non-BA RIS no matter how great it is. I'd love Darkness distributed in12 oz or 16 oz servings.

Just left F44... they have gobs of it @$19.99.

I don't "love" that it is sitting around, unless that motivates Surly to drop the price, or put it in a more drinker-friendly format. But, I'm not buying a bomber of RIS for $20, regardless of whose name is on the label or the fancy wax around the cap.

I think the first part is right on. 96.3% of the beer buying public isn't like "us", so I'd wager that a lot of people who buy it after seeing a blurb on KARE 11 news in October don't have any idea it's even around right now.

But there are seemingly more people willing to pay crazed prices for beer every day. I don't think $20 is much of a barrier to entry for a local beer that's worshipped like Darkness is. Hell, if it were the 2015 (which I love) & not the 2016, I'd be adding to my stash happily.

It'll definitely be interesting to see if it sells out as quickly this year as it normally had.

Surly has been dropping the prices on several beers this year and reducing the serving sizes too so we can hope (even though unlikely) that Darkness will be cheaper or in a small format someday.

I for one am just annoyed by how much was dropped recently. Why couldn't they have made more BA Darkness with it? I get the time and cost of making more BA but that would hardly make it to shelves before it would be gone. There are literally cases of regular still sitting around most liquor stores.

I am personally fine with Darkness becoming a shelf turd. If I can pick it up at my leisure and even with some age on it... bonus!

I'm going to agree with this. I just find it unfortunate that probably the one Minnesota beer that has consistently had trade value (yes, there's Magnus and Forager crowlers, but those are either unobtainable or just a crowler... can't really sit on them and age them, etc.) is now just sitting around for anyone to grab at any time. Definitely has lost some trade-ability.

But it is nice that it's far more accessible now. Overall, it's a "whatever" to me. I'd be happier about this if it was sitting around in four/six-packs.

My guess is this 2016 Darkness was being held by Surly for sale at their now closed Brewers Table restaurant. They are now selling Surly bombers of beer at their Beer Hall Cellar Raid sales at the brewery but had so much 2016 Darkness in stock they decided to distribute it. Just a wild guess. I don't expect to see drops of year old Darkness in future years.

Well, this is obviously for after I get cases from stores by using disguises, parents and non craft beer drinking friends.
