Just opened my only bottle and was purchased from 3F shortly after the 2017 release. Initially, I tasted strong tart cherry. Since warming the vanilla has come out and it tasting much better. This is the first time I've had RDF. Not sure how it tastes fresh.

Tart cherry wasn't in the equation when I opened it fresh

It's pretty easy to tell the 2014 instead of the 2017 version. 2014 was in the 25.4 oz Bruery style bottle and 2017 is in the 22 oz. bottle. Also i don't believe the 2014 version of Rue D'Floyd was infected. The Bruery version was but the FFF version was not. It was the 2014 Floyd D'Rue that was aged in rum barrels that was infected or just tasted awful.

I bought the 2014 version at FFF and it was definitely awful (infected). Ended up drain pouring it. The 2017 version I had on draft and from bottle (but relatively soon after release) was really good. Just a perfectly balanced BA stout with both vanilla and cherry working in harmony, with neither dominating the other.

I cannot comment on how the 2017 is tasting from the bottle now, but the 2014 I bought at FFF was definitely awful (in all likelihood infected).

I still think everyone is confusing the 2014 beers. Everyone keeps saying the Rue D'Floyd was infected but that I doubt that is the case since there were only like 500-600 bottles of this released at that time and doubt many people held the bottles. They released Floyd D'Rue right after and that was the rum barrel version and that one was really bad and was probably infected. They had Floyd D'Rue for sale for months and Rue D'Floyd sold out in a couple of days. Your own review says you had Floyd D'Rue and you thought it was infected. You more than likely did not have Rue D'Floyd as they were completely different beers.

This is exactly it. I can't believe we're having to rehash the same old Floyd d'Rue vs Rue d'Floyd discussion again.

That popped up several times a week for like 9 months on CCBE

Sounds probable. Wish I had Untappd back then to confirm. The 'clever' naming of the beers is causing confusion.

Has anyone had a '16 crack the skye recently? Still have one left and was wondering how it's tasting compared to 2017

Had it side by side and IMO its better to drink it fresh the 16 coffee had fallen off a bunch still good but my group all agreed 17 was better. I do prefer coffee dominated brews though.

I too just opened a 2017 Rue D'Floyd. I had to see for myself after reading some comments in this thread. Sour cherry dominates as well as a slight gym locker smell/ off putting taste behind the sour cherry. Nothing close to the awesome beer this was fresh from the bottle and tap.

Just popped a Rue. Smelled and tasted like a sour. Took one sip and drain poured.

I'm just going to throw this out there, anyone who is just going to drain pour one of these after opening, instead just recap and put in the fridge overnight and try it again. I didn't like this beer when I first opened it fresh, recapped the last half to have the next day and the flavors came through more and it tasted totally different to me, almost like aerating a wine...no guarantee this will do anything, but if you are going to dump it anyway, why not just let me know how it works out?

I tried my 2nd of 3 bottles last night. It's not infected by any means, but it's definitely a different beer than my first bottle which I cracked shortly after release. The way I'd describe it is "the cherries have taken over". With the help of my wife (which is what you'd want to do with a big beer like this I suppose), drank about two-thirds of it and didn't feel like going back downstairs before going to sleep. I dumped the rest of it this morning, though I wish I'd have read @HouseofWortship's post before that and taken his advice for science.
