Well, it is the normal here, in Sweden, since last year. But we import a lot of Urquell, and I don't think the Germans do. We all know about their Pils-making talents.

I'm confused -- the Germans don't import a lot of Urquell, so Urquell sends them green bottles? I'd have thought once Urquell started sending brown bottles to the U.S. (the marketing hot spot for the green bottle status symbol) they had stopped using green altogether.

Only Czech beer I had in Germany was Budvar (it wasn't available in the U.S. at the time, so I took advantage of the situation) and it came in brown bottles or vom Faß, but it was available.

They don't seem to have stopped completely no, we still got the green bottles for quite some time after the shift to brown in the US. It might also be more of a branding thing, as in: the green Urquell bottles are more recognizable with the public - you don't see Heineken ever giving the green thing up, for example.

So, Urquell's more limited - and perhaps somewhat precarious - presence in Germany might not benefit from a rebranding and repackaging of the product.

But then again, what do I know.

Yeah, that's what I was alluding to with my green bottle status symbol comment.
Hard to know, I guess -- especially since it was well-known for its packaging over here and they took the leap to change.

I have to wonder how many will actually notice Hofbräu switching to brown bottles -- there will probably be a lot of "They changed their recipe" threads because the skunk will be gone!

Sorry, could've read that better. It's interesting though, what you said about having a brown bottled Budvar in Germany - it comes in a somewhat iconic green bottle here, as it always has.

I saw the bottles in stores -- personally, I had it vom Faß. Was a while ago, so who knows how things may have changed. Probably not easy or economical having to source 2 different types of bottles.

Things may have changed over the years but to my knowledge Pilsner Urquell is probably the largest brand of imported beer in Germany.

    I'd argue against that.
The sad fact is that most Germans are buying their Beer in crates when theyre on sale.
If you look at the Top 10 best selling Beer, 8 of them are regularly available at or under 10 EUR/crate.

The others (Erdinger & Paulaner) are the most advertised wheat beer brands.
Pilsner Urquell on sale is usually at 13.99EUR/crate.
There's much cheaper czech Beer available like Pardal (Budvar Brand),Breznak (6,99/crate).
Theres no concrete sale numbers on foreign beer in Germany (other than that theyre not in the Top 15 sellers released every year).
Going by personal experience though Breznak sells like crazy and Heineken has got the Hotel/Airport bars on lock.
Pilsner Urquell is more of a "Premium" beer.

From what ive seen in Beer stores looking at other buyers i think Breznak,Budvar Lager,Heineken (and probably Carlsberg) sells better than PU.
    PU sells really well though.

Is Corona still a big seller in Germany? 5-6 years ago it felt like I saw a lot of places selling it and a lot of ads for it. This past year, not so much. Even the (legit, not Sausalito's) Mexican restaurants were primarily selling other Mexican beers.
Did it fall out of favor at all or is it still a big deal and I just didn't see it?

Honestly, I've never seen anybody buy Corona in a Beer store or Supermarket.
It seems pretty much relegated to Nightclubs & Mexican Restaurants.
Though i live in East Germany. Most foreign beer purchases are from the Czech Rep,Poland,Denmark with some Heineken or Guinness thrown in there.

Look friends -- an new Rauchbier (well, to me -- anyway), Göller Rauchbier spied at one of my semi-local spots.

Since the brewery is outside Bamberg, I'm sure I didn't try this when I traveled. It's very good -- maybe not as smooth as Schlenkerla, but a great rendition of the style.

Anyone else ever tried it? Besides HerrB, that is, but he can opine too!

Only time I strayed from traditional beer venues in Bamberg was the Irish pub we ran across -- and I drank Guinness.

Yeah, had it at the Brewery. The other Göller's smoked beer that is. Out by Drosendorf/Memmelsdorf. That Rauchbier is a seasonal.

Some friends had a bottle of the one you posted about. It was more on the lines of Spezial Lagerbier. Nice smoke, not too much.

The Göller I had was much darker than the last Spezial Lagerbier I tried -- more robust too (even at such a low ABV), if memory serves on the Spezial.

Yupp, actually had quite a lot of it, since it was the Rauchbier we carried regularly for a while at place I worked at. I would put it between spezial and Schlenkerla- not as bright and subtle as Spezila, but not as smoke-heavy as Schlenkerla, either.Very, very drinkable. Not a world beater, but yeah, nice.

I have no clue how I felt about this beer. Apparently I had two different experiences, although during the first post in 2015, I didn't have much experience with Rauchbiers. More experience likely changed things for me. Off the top of my head I remembered the Goller being a nice beer.

April 2015: "I don't know if this adds anything useful to your post, but I personally never even tried Rauchbiers until this past fall. The exception being Sam Adams Rauchbier in a fall pack a few years ago (I thought it was awful, tasted like bacon) and Schlenkerla's Helles (not a Rauchbier).

On a whim I decided to pick one up (Goller I believe), I really dug it. Then I started seaking out Schlenkerla's non-Helles offerings and had some on draft. I loved them."

August 2016: "I would avoid the Goller. It didn't taste "old", as in the flavor was smoky and not bacon-y/meaty. But it also lacked the depth and complexity I get with Schlenkerla. Not a lot of malt character aside from the smokiness, and the body was a bit lacking, a bit too thin if I recall."

I recently ordered most of Pyraser's lineup of Beers at Biershop Bayern.
I was really disappointed to see them use Sinamar for their Kellerbier & Schwarzbier.

Esp. the Schwarzbier had almost 0 roasted notes except a little nutty, syrupy note on the finish.
At least they put it on the Ingredients list i guess...........................
