So does showing up hoping for the best. Years back that was fine. Cantillon's cult following has been infiltrated by the rare chasers. It makes events like these harder to navigate.

Yikes. That's awful. Paid $25 for a 750 of Vig and $16 for a 350 of rose tonight. No zwanze no prob. Trill is really pushing it with pricing across the board.

 

Nah, at least that way you know right away if you got a ticket. Having to wait for 3 days only to find out your a loser sucks

 

thought I'd chime in quick...we did a bit of diligence about how to do mark up from wholesale pricing as this isn't something we're super familiar with. so we landed at prices on par if not lower than other shops that are lucky enough to be able to pour these special beers. aside from the general shittiness of taking advantage of lambic enthusiasts like that, we expect the van roy family and shelton folks would be pretty disheartened to see the intention of spirit of zwanze stomped on by doing something like that. clearly lambic is going to be pretty expensive...and we didn't shout about it through our ticket sale process or during the day, but we take the incredible enthusiasm for this stuff and amplify it in to something more impactful; we have proceeds from the event going to Family Reach, an organization that helps families experiencing financial distress due to cancer http://familyreach.org/our-mission/

 

A bit more: having demand outstrip supply is not a unique problem. Happens frequently in sports, music, Broadway, etc. But very rarely (never?) Do you see public lottery as the only mechanism for getting tickets.

Better than pure lottery would be a Golden ticket like method which awards customers a chance to win. You can take that in many ways which gives preference (or not) to frequent brewery visitors. As least this way you know you're giving tickets to frequent customers. This is why Super Bowl tickets are awarded by lottery only to season ticket holders, and then weighted by tenure. Reward your best customers

But, open lottery to anyone is the worst of all world's.

 

I respect your opinion, but totally disagree. I strongly prefer the open lottery system (perhaps even deprioritizing attendees from the previous year to allow new people to participate) to any other system and consider it the most fair, and it's not even close. It's also the simplest system to manage for Trillium.

From a business perspective, the only reason to prioritize frequent buyers would be to either increase revenue from those customers (because they feel Trillium has rewarded their patronage) or mitigate loss of revenue from those customers (because they feel Trillium hasn't rewarded their patronage). I just don't see either of those being big enough factors to cause Trillium to take on the additional overhead of a more complicated ticketing system.

Assuming you were at your computer at a precise time on a random day. Life happens and most people can't rearrange it to buy beer tickets. That system is the least fair. Giving everyone sufficient time to enter and then randomly selecting winners is fair. It just is. If Trillium wants to hold a few slots for its best customers and long time supporters, more power to them. Maybe they did.
