But you don't walk into the brewery. You go into a nearby garage off Surly property where the muny has set up a temporary bottle shop.

I think the biggest thing Surly certainly gains from bottle sales is the ability to hold this event at all. Brooklyn Center and the neighboring businesses basically look the other way on a massive public drunkfest that barely keeps itself in check. Despite dumpster fires and stolen hybrids, it's amazing Surly is still able to hold this event and probably no accident either.

The bottle sales haven't been in the brewery for several years, it is down the street in a different building. Where is this Candy going to be??

I’ll have a van parked in the shadows of the lumberyard. I’m expecting to have some top-notch candy. I prefer if you come alone.

Probably the 2016 Darkness. Minneapolis had a drop last week.

I know. Sarcasm. See "bigly". Not sure if your sarcasm meter is busted or mine is.

Absolutely. But I'll wager there's some money involved in the decision, too.

And the fact that this has been going on for a decade without an incident that caused the city to shut it down is nothing short of miraculous. I guess we are mild-mannered Midwesterners after all.

I'm going to ask a stupid question. I'm going to be in town during Darkness Day and was thinking about going to the event. Besides Darkness 2017 are there any other Darkness that they are selling in bottles like BA Darkness 2016? I thought maybe I could get there and pick up a few bottles of Darkness 2017 at around 10am and have bottles in hand by 11:30am but it seems like that's not the case. Why the hassles if Darkness 2017 is hitting distro the week after?

For most it is about Darkness Day Eve and the massive social gathering/bottle share... getting bottles is a bonus.

For me, while it is getting easier to get Darkness since they are putting out a ton, I do like the fact that I am able to get all that I want/need at one time instead of having to hit multiple stores.

As for other bottles, right now we just don't know. It was 2 years ago that every allotment included one bottle of BA, but they did not do that last year. I would say right now, it is a wait and see, but personally I am not counting on it.

I heard the same actually from a friend working at a local G-will. Specifically about 2017, so we'll see.

You can guarantee to get 6 bottles at a set price without tax by going to Darkness Day (plus all the fun social aspect.
Or, even if easier than used to be, still have to drive to multiple stores, who probably will price it higher than it is at Darkness Day and pay tax on it.

I agree with the price comment, you will be saving at least $3 a bottle buying at Darkness Day. You are still paying tax at Darkness Day, its just built into the price they advertise.
I disagree about Darkness Day being easier to get your bottles. That place is a sh*t show, parking is terrible and you have to factor in the time commuting to the brewery, shifting through drunk crowds and waiting in line to get your bottles. Local stores usually limit to 2 so you are looking at going to 3 different stores. Personally I think its easier to get your bottles locally but I think that will depend on your distance to the brewery and the density of liquor stores in your area.
If all you care about is the bottles, go local but if you are free on Darkness day early morning I'd recommend going to the brewery!

I thought I recalled some big box stores last year having it for cheaper (after tax) than Darkness Day.

If there was I never saw it. Was $20 on Darkness Day. You can find it for $19.99 pre-tax. What would it have to be, like $17 to come out about the same? Is tax localized or state level? This is too confusing. Just give me beer!

I think it was Costco that had Darkness for $17.99 or so last year. It was below $20 with tax.

I actually think they sold BA Darkness was a similar price as well. Maybe a dollar more.

Hmmm, I'm going to go camp out at Costco. It has everything you need and 95% less dumpster fires.

Does anyone know if they are doing Regular Darkness and BA Darkness on completely different dates again like last year?
