Had Black Mask and CG this weekend. Both were great. Is Black Mask the same base beer as Black Maple? Just got a lot of similar notes and Black Maple is one of my all time favorites.

I believe Black Mask is the same beer as champion ground, just with the different adjuncts.

I had originally heard the same, but the two tasted so much different, that I really thought CG stood on it's own, then Mask tasted a lot more like Black Maple. I guess the coffee used in CG could just be that much different that it gives the beer a totally different flavor? In any event, they're all great, just curious more than anything. The Dark App and Oil series is really easy to follow as far as variants, but these are kinda the outliers where I'm not as sure on what the base beer is.

Same base beer. Very different coffee beans in origin and roast. Then the added adjuncts. Black maple drops on 10/20! Draft only coffee variant...!

    1. That's awesome to see how different the adjuncts can make that beer. Really impressive that you can truly take a beer two different ways with adjuncts, vs just building on the base beer subtly like the dark app and oil lines (both fantastic in their own right)

    2. Still enjoying the last of my '16 BM reserves, but cannot wait to get the new batch and... coffee variant??? Yesssss

Just realized that with black Mask out, BM is indistinguishable as Black Maple vs Black Mask.

I understand the stout vs porter piece, I do, but I've also had just about every JO's BA offerings and Black Mask and Black Maple were just the most similar I've had. Also, with the fact JO's stouts are thinner than most for the ABV it's really splitting hairs to try and say one is an Imperial Porter while another and Imperial Stout.

    Sorry, but I disagree.

I think they are **thicc**, as the kids say.

Seriously, I think the BBA JOs are thicker than most and that's why I like 'em.

I believe the brewer has said he purposely brews them thinner than most, so you can easily take down a bottle in one sitting and not have it feel too heavy. I'd like to know what stouts you are drinking that are noticeably thinner than most Jackie O's.

Maybe I'm improperly attributing the thickness with barrel character, now that I think of it. Scratch what I said. Good beer is good.

I've had some terribly thin local BA stouts. I won't name names just to bitch.

The "amazing beer, but could only drink a few ounces" craze doesn't make sense to me. I want someone to drink an entire bottle or maybe split it with someone else. Underattenuated, sugar rich, thick stouts are a chore to drink. Where is the enjoyment in that? It's all about shock factor and the newest/shiniest object.

A lot of those brewers aren't even shooting for a well rounded beer. If they can check one new box they are happy.
    Thickest DIPA
    Sweetest stout
    Most Oreos still in suspension

If it doesn't taste or resemble beer the more popular it is.

Add "beer that looks and tastes the most like fruit juice". For example, those Joose beers from The Answer that are really just Anderson Valley Gose with a shit ton of fruit puree. Embarrassing.

The real shame is that since it's so widespread we are starting to see perfectly great beer catch negative feedback from new age nerds. "Their IPAs are not juicy, their stouts are thin, not enough candy flavoring, this Gose isn't bright red".

So when people pass of. f stuff I say here as trolling and hating they clearly are also guilty of this.
