I appreciate all the info! One last question, any good BYOB places in the area? I know someone mentioned a Thai place, not really my cup of tea.

Lucali is great, but be prepared for a wait on most nights.

Am I reading their website correctly? They are now open Monday 12pm-10pm?

Lucali pizza + DDH Small Green sounds like a heavenly pairing... Might just have to make the trek down to Carroll Gardens tomorrow now that the thought has been planted in my mind. Goddammit.

There is a small italian place called Sam's down Court St (cash only) in Carol Gardens. My family has been going there for over 5 decades.
Haha that was my impression too. That is fine with me though as my girlfriend is a teacher and has off and I'm taking a half day. I finally convinced her to take the trip with me so we can go to Hometown BBQ.

I could see how this beer would be somewhat polarizing, but I'm liking the Evil Twin collab. The nose smells a lot like grape Kool-Aid/fun dip powder. Taste tempers those fruity notes with an earthy/grassy characteristic. I'm satisfied.

My impression was that it's a noticeably different taste profile from most OH beers (unlike say Vic Secret/Mosaic...), maybe due to the Columbus, a hop they rarely seem to use.

It has Columbus? I was under the impression it was just Mosaic, Motueka, and Tomahawk from the Instagram post.

Regardless, I feel like Columbus is a hop that needs to be utilized more often. It functions a lot like Equinox does; works great as a supporting role to add some bitterness/balance, but not so much as the dominant hop.

I'm fairly certain Columbus and Tomahawk (and Zeus) are all the same hop. The same people who might say black ipa is cascadian dark ale might also call Columbus by Tomahawk. I reckon there could also be a supplier thing and they go by what their supplier calls it.

edit: whoops, guess Zeus isn't the same but whatever

Ah...I could see that being the case. Could be something like the Equinox/Ekuanot situation.

*Edit: it seems from the link you posted that Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus are all varying descendants of the Nugget hop, whereas the Equinox/Ekuanot could very well be the same hop, just "rebranded."

I'm pretty sure Forever Simcoe and Southernhopalistic just lasted longer. I could be wrong though.

Correct. Columbus/Tomahawk/Zues are all hybrid versions of Nugget and are virtually interchangeable. The big hop distributors actually rebranded them to "CTZ" hops which can replace any of the above in a recipe.

As others have mentioned, Lucali is fantastic. Get the large calzone. Probably one of the most delicious things you'll ever have. And it's about a 20 minute walk, but Emily's is also superb, and I would say they serve the second best pizza in the city (Di Fara's being the top). They also have one of the city's best burgers, but they only make about 20 or 25 a night. Put your name in, and wait at Hops Hill which is an excellent bar across the street with plenty of beers on tap.

If we're talking 20 minute walks, then anyone looking for food around OH should consider Hometown BBQ. Probably a ten minute cab ride. Stop in at Raaka for some chocolate samples before or after too.

I don't think Hometown would let you drink outside booze, though.

+1 on the Emily/Hops Hill tandem. One of the best combos in the city.

Great suggestions but Emily is hardly in the area.
