Yes interesting read, thanks for that. It does seem to conclude that our brains adjust to make up (fill in the blanks?) for the reduced tastebuds. Wow I can't wait to get old

Yeh there's a good bit of adjustment, but things like needing more salt to get something to be flavorful will need a lot of compensation and overall that bit about the aromas training looks beneficial but would involve a bit of work. (So that getting old bit may require a good bit practice. )

FWIW, last weekend I picked up a case of Jever bottled on 7/18/17 and it tastes great. Pretty fresh for an import. One certainly has to be patient watching dates on all imports, not just Jever, but it's not an impossible task. Jever prints very clear packaged date on cases and bottles. Some retailers will also take special orders/requests with freshness date stipulations for customers.

+1 on Bitburger. Great beer and a great price. Can't beat it for 4.99 a four pack of 16.9oz cans.

I can't speak to similar American options, as the only American beer I see in these parts are Samuel Adams and Anchor Steam Beer, but definitely give Pilsner Urquell and Stiegl Pils a try. Neither one of them are German (Czech and Austrian, respectively) but they are both top notch examples of the style and always impress me.

Anchor steam makes old foghorn, try to get some, full of awesomeness.

The only beers from them I've seen around are Steam Beer and Brekle's Brown. Both were excellent.

Talk to your beer seller there, if they carry that brand, should be able to get some of that barleywine. Sorry for the derail.

I would consider 3 month old beer to be quite a find. I keep looking but enerything I see is way past my buying point.

Dale, I found that batch (bottled July 2017) at my local Wegman's yesterday and I bought a 6-pack.
The majority of the time that is my experience as well.

I am starting to agree with Randy (@Ranbot) that we get infrequent drops of Jever and it is basically a case of luck to find a fresh drop. IMO the fact that Jever utilize a 15 month best by duration exacerbates the situation. You could complain to a retailer when you find a batch of 9 month old Jever on his shelf and he could reply that the beer is 'good' for another 6 months; it is still very fresh.

    Cheers!

I'm just so dissappointed that when I go to the store I see Weistephaner that is 6 months old, and I believe these beers to perhaps be quicker movers than most. If I find it under 3 months I might buy it, but that's my limit on these beers. Maybe that's too strict for the circumstances, but I'm not paying $12 on a old beer, I'll buy local first.

    Dale (@nc41),

Earlier this evening I had my first bottle of Jever from my 6-pack and it was very, very tasty.

I most appreciated the sulfur on the nose (Sulfur Dioxide - burnt match) when it was freshly poured on this fresh batch. It had all of the other great qualities of Jever: bone dry, etc.

I am confident that Randy (@Ranbot) is enjoying the case be purchased of this batch.

    Cheers!

Straub 1872 is available in cases. Not technically a pils but it may fill your needs. Def worth a try. Cheers!

I have been monitoring Jever for almost 2 years and at least in Southeast PA there seem to be large shipments that only occur 2 or maybe 3 times per year. So, I just have watch close and get fresh when I can. I don't know if this happens in other regions.

I'm sure most people here don't even know what a Jever is. It's only sold by the bottle here so right off you know it's a slow mover. I'd bet I'd be right he orders a case a minimum of twice a year, then splits it to bottles increasing shelf time.

Buy the Sam Adams Fall seasonal 12 pack and try the Bohemian Pilsner. Best pilsner I've had in 2017, and I tried quite a handful of new ones this spring/summer. Fall must be the new pilsner season I guess.

According to the Sam Adams website it is a year-round beer. No need to buy a variety pack.

    Cheers!

P.S. A bit weird that they label it as a Bohemian Pilsner but state that it is a German Pilsner on their website description.

They shouldn't put this beer out year round. Look at how that worked for their Noble Pils. It will get stale and collect dust. Seasonal 6er would be ideal. The hop profile is wonderful in this one and shouldn't be consumed Old. I haven't seen it in 6er format anywhere. Has anyone else? Might be my distribution area. They never carried noble Pils when it was a year round offering. I had to go out-of county to buy it.
